Need Some Help - Won't Start or crank - Runs Fine if Bump Started

Morning All,

Thanks in advance for any help, suggestions or comments. I have a 98 civic coupe with a d16y7

I went to work this morning everything was fine just went out to get coffee and i turned the key and nothing, all the cluster light radio and seatbelt chime came on but it wouldn't start. I was parked on an incline and it bump started and ran fine. Parked the car again and left it for a while and it still won't start. It makes a very small faint click noise.

I used a multi meter to check the battery and it is fine, voltage stays at 12.4-12.2 even if radio, blower motor and lights are on.

The battery cables are on and clean.

Any ideas?

Thanks again, Gavin

Starter or starter solenoid possibly. Also check all the cables and connections on the starter.

Alright will do, could it be a grounding issue? I was doing some more research, what are your thoughts on a main realy. I heard main relays fail in really hot weather.

could be as simple as the ground on the starter. but something related to the starter.

^+1, and wouldn't hurt to check the main relay. but the fact that it does start and run, would that not indicate the main relay is fine?

^Glad you got it fixed and thanks for following up.

We make so many guesses and try to diagnose problems on here and most people don't post up what the problem was after they get it fixed, and we never find out...lol.

So yeah, thanks!

that ground is prolly what pooches the starter solenoid. As for the main relay, not in this case but in cases where the relay is gone, the bump start may have just been co-incidence that it work that time. I had mine go earlier this year and the car wouldn't start, then after a few tries at a bump start, it went. drove the car for lunch, then back to my shop before shutting it off so I wouldn't have to push it in. (staff parking wasn't in our lot) didn't matter the car would start fine, over and over. drove it in after work, shut it off, tried again, no start. checked the relay at that point and it was facked. put a new one in and no issues since. took the old one apart and re-soldered the board and it works, keep it for a back up in my bag o tricks I keep in my trunk.

Glad to hear your cars fixed and wasn't some weird electrical issue.
