Just got oil change 10w30 ok? weird experience..

I just took my 95 b16 hatch to get the oil changed at an economy lube, it advertises 19.99 10min change or whatever so i went. They just took the car in and changed the oil without asking me anything so whatever i figured they'd just put in the correct weight of oil and what not. When they gave me back the car they were like oh turnes out were doing some deal where we do synthetic for the same price as conventional, which is fine, and then they said they put in 10w30 because my engine is a high output engine? it says use 5w30 on the oil cap.. And isnt 5w30 better in winter anyways because its not as thick? So i was just like doesnt the manufacturer reccomend 5w30 and they assured me they did the right thing for my engine. I thought it was weird, any thoughts?

Next time don't take it to an "economy lube".

lol..

so did they put in 10w30 synthetic? or 10w30 conventional?

Honestly, it doesnt even matter. 5w30 would be ideal for winter, but its not going to blow your motor

No it doesn't trully matter. There is only a difference when your engine is cold. After your car has warmed up, the oils will have the same viscosity at full operating temperature

A jack, jack stands, drain pan, the oil and filter I selected myself, in my garage. Thats my economy lube.

That way I know it's done right every time.

Honestly, if you change your oil regularly, your car will be fine, regardless of which oil they put in.

when i buy oil and a filter i spend more than $19.99 doing it myself.
$16-18 jug of oil and a $7 honda oil filter.
Although the oil you get at those economy places is really cheap stuff. Next time you go specifiy what you want done before they do anything.
I took my car to pennzoil a few years ago (during winter) and told them to use the Honda oil filter i had on my passenger seat and i even told them that i wouldn't care if they still charged me for one of their oil filters, just as long as they put the Honda one on for me, but they didn't. I was so tempted to go back and demand for them to put on the OEM filter, but i had other places to be, so i let it slide.
I wouldn't be too worried about the weight of the oil, as long as its not like 20-W50 or something, i'd be more worried about if they put the proper amount of oil in there.

yeah the filter is a penzoil filter that they put in, and the oil was their platnum synthetic or whatever it was called they let me see it after, they put that oil in for the same price as conventional because i got my tranny and coolant changed. I just wish they would have asked, and i realize now that i need to specify what i want if i take my car to those places.
