Failed Emmissions "NO PPM" fail

Car just purchased the other day.

Passed safety.

Figured it would pass emmissions as well.

Turned out it failed.

Problem was "NO ppm limit" reading was 1049 and limit is 636

Any ideas of what this problem is "usually" cause by?

if the cat is the problem, then yeah it should pass... thing is w/ that kinda mileage, it's anyone's guess what's actually wrong with the car. you'd do yourself a big service by getting a quote for work req'd to get it to pass emissions - a qualified pro def needs to look at it.

I just got mine to pass and I failed on the same thing this week....

2000 civic with 225,000km and my exhaust manifold was cracked and the O2 sensor on the top was no good.

Replaced the Manifold (with built in Cat) and the 2 O2 sensors and it passed....

Not a cheap fix though.

If u need emissions test done. I can get the car to pass for around $250-$300 guarantee to pass or $$$ back at no charge. I will need the actual vehicle. If anyone is interested pls visit me at www.hongsauto.com or call 647-435-6228 for Warren. We do all diagnostics and repairs.

it needs a cat for sure. mine 95 si had an extremely high Nox reading also. i changed the cat and it dropped well within spec. take it to any reputable exhaust shop and have on installed and you WILL pass E-test.

for e-test i always do a tune up... go test it, if it fails.. get a cat.. and its usually a fool-proof system for a pass... sometimes even changing the ECU mine failed everything 4x over, changed the ecu and it passed with flying colors...

NOX readings will rise sharply during acceleration and will peak a few seconds after the cruising speed is reached. If the EGR system fails to recirculate exhaust back into the intake manifold, combustion temperatures will rise causing an increase in NOX. The higher temperatures may also cause some detonation (spark knock) to occur, which may be audible when the engine is under load. Causes of elevated NOX emissions during acceleration include:

Defective EGR valve;

Leaky EGR valve plumbing or control solenoid;

Carbon deposits in EGR manifold passageways;

Carbon buildup on pistons and in combustion chamber;

Over-advanced ignition timing;

Defective knock sensor;

Engine overheating (check thermostat, fan, coolant level);

Exhaust restrictions.

NOX is a reading indicating exhaust/combustion temperature
