d16 head question
what different heads can i put on my car ? my car is SOHC, but i need DOHC any thoughts

You can put an H,B or K series head on the D. The letters don't mean anything....
I'm just kidding.. You can't just change the head... you have to change everything why do you need DOHC |
you don't think i need it, what would be the disadvantage of SOHC to a DOHC

You can not put any other D head onto you D15/D16 block. SOHC smaller, DOHC bigger. Nothing is the same between them, you can not go and just put on a b16/b18/b20 onto a d15/d16, it will just not work.

well i know someone that has a b18 bottom and h22 head but he had to send it to California to get it machined and what not. I would have to do the samething if i wanted to change it ? or it would be better to swap the engine completely ?

I think he was pulling your chain b/c that would be a rediculous amount of work when putting a b-series vtec head on is a very very simple process. |

yes it would be better to swap the entire engine. If fact, it is your only option if you want DOHC. Also just to give you the answer to your next question if you change the engine you also have to change all the engine dressings (intake manifold, exhaust manifold, distributor ect..) transmission, axles, motor mounts, shift linkage, ECU or chip it. which in total CAN cost 2000-7000$ depending on the motor. |

so to turbo a DOHC would be better then to turbo a SOHC right obviously ?

I wouldn't generalize like that.
Stock for stock a turbo B-series (DOHC...VTEC or not) would be better than a stock D-series (SOHC....VTEC or not) because the B-series engines are stronger than the D-series and can safely handle more WHP in stock form. Now if its DOHC you're after and not necessarily swapping out to a b-series or h-series engine you can use the DOHC ZC engine, its technically a d-series and will bolt up to your stock tranny. I have however tuned a SOHC that makes more power than most of DOHC's around here. This is why I say don't generalize. The $$$ it cost to build the SOHC capable of handling 400whp/335wtq was definately less than swapping to a B-series engine. So I wouldn't say a turbo DOHC would be better than a turbo SOHC |
alright so instead of swapping I should just change internals such as valves, lifters, pistons and all that and turbo it and come out with some power that can challenge b series and h series engines maybe even k series ?

well i know turbo is expensive, but i want to be able to handle 18 psi, so i am guessing a budget of 3,000 and thats excluding suspension work

what i'd do is build the bottom end with some vitara pistons/eagle rods, use some ARP head studs and get a better valvetrain (springs/retainers) if you wanna run 18psi.

thats just parts to build an vitara piston/eagle rod d-series capable of handing that much boost.
A new brand name turbo kit will cost $3000-5000 alone. If you buy a used kit you can get it cheaper or if you peice a kit together it'll be cheaper. A budget of $3000 for a boosted setup can be tight. Heres a quick breakdown of the prices (roughly) turbo kit $1000-4000 (depends if you buy used, homemade stylez or a nice new kit) injectors $100-400 (depends if you buy used DSM 450ccs or some new RC or Precision) fuel pump $120 (walbro 255lph) tuning $500-1000 (you may need an ecu conversion harness and/or chipped obd1 ecu) You'll also need an upgraded clutch to handle the extra power your engine will make. This might not be necessary right off the bat, but trust me, if you're using a stock clutch or something with a fair amount of mileage on it, you'll be replacing it after a short while. As for labour, you're looking at $700-1500 depending on where you go and how much fabrication is needed to make everything work properly. |
not to thread jack, but andrew whats your take on the y8 oil pump, im debating weither to get an oem, port and shim it, or get a toga HV pump. I have heard mixed things about toga though.
