Question Camshaft, Valve Train upgrades and oil problem questions

I was wondering if and how much gains I would get from Skunk2 Valve springs, skunk2 titanium retainers, skunk2 std compression intake and exhaust valves? I have a B16a 2nd gen obd 1 and I burn oil. I wanna know if its worth putting pro series cams and gears in it.

-kinda off topic too but... if I got a oil pressure gauge to monitor, that would tell me if the oil is low?

-Thanks

Your oil is seeping through rings (most likely), so having a gauge to monitor pressure won't tell you much. It will still build up the required pressure in the head. To fix the oil problem (assuming its the rings), you would have to tare down the block, depending on the condition would may need to be honed then slightly bigger pistons and matching rings would be needed.

For the cam question, you would see gains of 25-30hp though the loss of compression due to oil burning problem would affect it.

If I was you, I'd rather either build or rebuild bottom end so its healthy and doesn't burn oil. Even with proper compression the car will feel more responsive and quicker. Then move onto building the head.

2 most common causes of b16's burning oil: Like he said ^ pistons rings are worn (due to high rpm operation) and could also be the valve seals/guides. How many km's are on the motor?

Like scrid3r said, your best bet is to rebuild with new rings. You can also throw in a set of new valve seals/guides while your at it.

To properly benefit from s2 pro series cams you'll need: upgraded valve springs/retainers, higher compression (at least 11:1+), a good header with 2.5" collector, full 2.5" exhaust, a better flowing intake manifold with a larger tb, and to be properly tuned on a dyno. If your setup lacks one or more of these things, it is pointless to run those cams.

If you are prepaird to do all the work (or pay to have it done), go for it.

May I ask you, what are your power goals? Or are you just looking to 'refresh' the engine?

I want to keep it N/A. keep it powerful but still using it for everyday driving. im not TOO sure about how many kms. i was told under 80k but the engine has been in 3 peoples possession and had mods done prior. the owner before is someone within the family so i know he wouldn't try to screw me on purpose. It is an older motor and used but i think it has lots of potential and I'm willing to put the money into it...

You'll NEVER see 25-30hp from a cam swap in a honda.....NEVER!!!!!

Its more like 10whp if you're lucky, but thats assuming you pick the right cam and Junk2 Pro series would NOT be the right cam for a stock b16.

You'll want at least 12.5:1 CR to run ANY Pro-series cam. You'll also want to port the head and get the cams degreed in after installing them.

I personally don't like the Pro-series stuff and continue seeing less than impressive results with them. They're too big for 95% of the setups out there IMO.

What I would do is, mill the head 0.030" to raise up the compression some, then use ITR cams or maybe skunk2 stage2 (not pro-series) along with a good 3" short-ram intake, 65mm throttle body, the P30 intake manifold is actually quite good and builds the power quick (but if you want a different one i'd use either the ITR or AEBS), a decent 4-2-1 header with 2.5" collector (I like the vibrant j-spec myself) and a 2.5" exhaust and some adjustable cam gears to dial in the cams....and of course some dyno tuning.

This setup should be good for about 160-170whp or maybe a little more.

well i bought the Skunk2 intake and exhaust valves, springs, and titianium retainers. I was looking at 68mm throttle body from skunk2 on the skunk2 intake manifold. I have a 4-1 DC header already on the motor with a full 2.5" magna flow exhaust. The motor was supposedly port polished before i got it. (i cant tell the difference if it is or isn't) It also has an aftermarket fuel regulator. I go through gas quite fast with this car. I would much rather bring the car to your shop Zeeman, but there's an issue with insurance and my plate sticker atm... as soon as everything is sorted out, your shop is 1st on my list.

I was told from a few people, "Just replace your block with a b20 block instead of replacing piston rings..." would that work and wouldn't that make it a 2.0L then? kinda confused...
