b18c cold start up issues
A month ago I swapped a b18c motor into my cx hatch. When the engine is warm, the motor absolutly RIPS and has no issues. On cold starts (car sitting for 2-3 hours) however, the motor seems to want to bog and stall. I have to hold it at 1500rpm to warm it up, because it wont do it on its own, like it should. After a minute or so of holding it at 1500rpm, i'll take my foot off the pedal, and it idles smoothly at 1000rpm. I hear that it could be a main relay problem, but I never had the problem before the swap, so what are the chances the relay would go at exactly the same time?.... unlikely I think...right? Do you guys think it may just be a slightly clogged injector acting up on cold starts? Any ideas from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Hey chris im currently having that problem on my civic too. I have an LS Bottom end- Type R Head semi built--I have a problem i cant identify, My car dies by itself sometimes when im in neutral. I also have to rev the gas at 1,500rpm for a few minutes every morning so it doesnt die. I changed the distributor and timing belt yesterday, and its still idling rough even when i rev it say 2,000 rpms it will move around and idle ruff in the mornings...WHATS THE PROBLEM, i already paid 600$ yesterday but problem still occurs...what can it be?

^^ that is most likely it. You can remove it and clean the screens with some brake/throttle body cleaner. Double check the wiring leading up to the iac valve.
If you don't feel like wasting money guessing what it could be (because online everybody is just guessing until you start taking it apart and examine the condition of the parts) I'm sure Chris or zeeman would be able to pin point the problem.
OP it is not the main relay. Main relay just activates the fuel pump. If it was not working properly you would not start the car.

Sounds like you got an incompetent mechanic.
It's hard to diagnose a vehicle online. If it's running rough it could be anything honestly. If it's idling rough, I'd do a cylinder balance test first to indicate any dead cylinders. If that passes, I'd go into testing mechanic timing and critical sensors such as the MAP.

I have a jdm B18c R in my EK and before I parked it for the winter I had this EXACT problem. Eventually it stopped starting....I have yet to look at it to figure out what was wrong, I will be looking at it this weekend. If you find out OP what it was please post.
Now as far as it being the IACV how would the car warming up affect it? I cleaned my IACV when I did the swap which was a couple months before it died.

If the vehicle runs rough when the throttle is cracked open, 95% of the time the IACV is fine.

Hey Chris i appreciate your response brother. I did what you told me, i checked the compression test of all cylinders, happy to say there all around 180. so its definatley not a compression problem. I also took out the map air flow sensor which is connected to the throttle body, i cleaned it with intake cleaner, yet the motor is still idling rough. Id like to work with you, any number i can contact you at? All I know is that my motor is mint, I dont mean to brag or anything, but this motor I have doesnt even burn a pinch of oil. Iv been through all b-series motors, and this setup has given me no problems what so ever. I just want my car up and running like normal...any suggestions? may I bring the car into your shop?? by the way, Im finished working with this mechanic, he doesnt respect or appreciate his cutomers..
