Acceleration Problem

I have a 99 civic si with 166km on it. I'm having this problem with acceleration, it's very sluggish and it hesitates....almost like something is holding it back. If I'm accelerating on the highway then let go of the accel. for a few seconds, then accelerate again, I get this jerk like it doesn't want to go. Also at around 1500 rpm it just starts to buckle, and jerk rather than smoothly deccelerate. Sometimes it runs fine, usually this starts happening when the car has been driven for a while and it warms up.

Here is what has been done to the car:

Changed distributor cap and rotor - OEM from Honda 1 month ago
Changed spark plug wires with NGK - Last July
Changed spark Plugs with NGK Iridium - A little over a year ago
Changed Fuel Filter with OEM from Honda - Last July

I have a rebuilt tranny, freshly rebuilt in October.....I had this problem before the tranny issue, so it has nothing to do wid that I'm pretty sure.

I check the oil level regularly and make sure its topped up.

Everything else on the car is stock, only thing I have is a Axle back muffler and an AEM V2 cold air.

Help is appreciated, thanks.

could be a clogged cat.
Could be the spark plugs, they don't last forever, next time use the NGK v-power (the cheap ones).

Is the check engine light on?

Verify the MAP sensor electrical connector...unplug/replug

Hey I am having the very same problem with my 98 si....I changed both primary and secondary o2 sensors, dist cap and rotor, also changed and gapped spark plugs.

The bogging seems to happen after 20 mins or so of driving.....it will begin to bogg down as i put the pedal down, no matter how far i slam the gas it will bogg, untill about 3500 rpm then i can feel some power increase but its still not 100%....I dont understand how it only happens after a while of driving it...

I havent checked any fuel system components as of yet....any ideas??

Make sure the air filter is clean too. you wouldn't believe how many cars I've seen with acceleration problems and no power, pop open the air box and the stock paper filter is plugged solid.

redsir6g 16-Mar-2008 04:20 PM

Well i have checked my air filter its pretty new still, i have a generic short ram intake on it...Does anyone have any suggestions here?

Thanks

"hmmm.. my temp. gauge is going up.. lets see how far it goes!!!" smooth move bud, you probably overheated your motor now.

Hopefully your not driving around like that on a regular basis. Your best bet is to take i to a mechanic and hopefully you haven't caused any more damage.

2 door civic, check the ignition timing with a light, and check that the timing belt hasn't skipped any teeth. verify fuel pressure at the rail as well.

redhotek, it sounds a lot like a blown head gasket. check condition of oil and coolant, when mixed it looks like a chocolate shake.

Hey guys did you ever figure out what the problem is with the car? My 99 SIR is doing the exact same thing when your acclerate the car falls on its face and it only does it when the car is warmed up when it is cold it runs like a dream. Any help would be appreceated

si_ponz 30-Jun-2008 05:26 PM

wow, this seems like a recurring problem. It is also happening to my car now...i noticed in 4th or 5th gear once driving for a while on the highway it will feel like a nudge and the acceleration is drastically reduced...so much that when im going up a hill in 5th on the highway i loose speed and need to downshift to maintain speed in 4th gear...wierd thing is once i turn off the car and turn it on again its perfectly fine.

does it need tuning?

jamie1985 18-Sep-2008 10:36 AM

I'm having the same problem!!! I've replaced the dizzy cap and rotor and new plugs! I'm thinking about the fuel filter....need help! Please help!

MrX 18-Sep-2008 11:36 AM

I'm having the same problem but mine isn't vtec. I've heard that if you retard the timing you'll get more power down low.

jamie1985 18-Sep-2008 01:16 PM

I don't think it has anything to do with the timing...it seems like a fuel cutting out problem because I dont think it is a spark problem because I replaced most if not all spark components...but maybe not I dunno...need more help

bbarbulo 18-Sep-2008 04:12 PM

all the obd2 guys, get a scan tool and get a sensor readout on your laptop when this is happening. log the sensor data or have a buddy keep an eye on changing parameters. look for injector fuel trim data and ignition timing. it sounds like the car is going into limp mode w/o throwing a cel. if all the sensor data checks out correctly, then you can start looking at 'hard' parts like the ignition coil.
