Why do smart strips have LED lights?

Why do smart strips have LED lights?
I understand how the smart strips work with phantom loading or whatever. But how much electricity do the little LED lights use on the actual strip to show you the smart strip is working properly? Do they not cancel out what you're saving by using the smart strip?
