repairing rust and minor damage

Hi Guys,

Before i start i'd just like to say thanks for your help and it's very much appreciated...

i was going to buy a new car in a year or two but decided that it was more of a want then a need and i can keep driving my civic (which i love to death) for another 5 years or so and instead put the new car money aside for a house...

now i have a 92 civic hatch with some serious rust issue in the rear and minor dents, scratchs, and rust spots in other areas... I can't bare to look at the car and see it in this condition... so im looking to spend some coin on fixing these issues but not willing to get a shop to do the work untill i have a home with a garage to store the car.. because right now id just be paying to fix it and the car would be sitting out in the snow in the winters which is not good..

so for now i'd like to just do what i can and get the car looking decent untill im ready to get the pros to work on it (within the next 3 years)

So i was wondering what methods you guys suggest for fixing major and minor rust problems aswell as major and minor dents on a car on a low budget... basically a do it yourself that i can do in my back yard..

if you guys want to see some pics just ask.. i can take some, its not a problem...

any help would be great..

thanks

Bruno

lets see some pics!

I'd advise investing in a welder, if you want to do it right that's the only way. Their is likely metal patches preformed available for the common area's on that vehicle. Once you get some pics up I can probably help you out.

so if anyone has any other suggestion other then welding i'd appreciate it..

junkyard... grab some fenders then paint them the colour of your car

wouldn't know how much that would cost though

Those rear fenders are one massive piece. They run from the back of the front fender to the taillights/bumper, from the roof to the rocker panels, the same piece that the door(s) are mounted to. They usually sell for about $800 per side from Honda.

The other option is getting pre-stamped sheet metal, cut out the area in which the replacement piece will cover, then weld it in.

And the last option is LOTS of bondo, which might last 2 years or so, till the paint starts peeling and the bondo starts cracking.

^^^ wow i would never resort to that masive piece you are talking about.. and im sure no shop ever would ither... they sell smaller pieces for the rear quarters... made so that you only cut out a certain section and weild the new on in... these go for about 100 each.. for 800 per side id might aswell just look for a new civic... lol...

im thinking im going to just bondo the **** out of it... do my best... all i want is something that will last me 1-2 years... soemthing i can do myself and once it starts looking like **** again in 1-2 years i should then have the money to do it right...

has anyone ever done massive repair to there car like this without welding.. if so what is the procedure used??? what materials will i need??

any helps or links in the right direction would help..

thanks,

I will hopefully be going that work this winter. Some may say you're stupid for doing such a thing. Though it's all about how much you love your car.

I need to have a look at it again. It's a big job, lot of the work of dismantling the interior side plastics, removing the taillights, doors....that i know of for sure. And possibly the front fender, rocker panel, rear bumper.

It's just like sculpture class in high school. With a lot of sanding.

Check the DIY's.

i will but perhaps some have done it that havn't posted anything and they have suggestions because this isn't just grinding down some minor rust and patching it.. this is cutting out a chunk of metal and replacing it with something other then metal...

i thought perhaps i could get some pointers on materials and how to

if you want it fixed pretty good i can cut that out and weld in new metal and fix it up in primer for you and you can do the rest yourself to save some cash but still get the life you want from it.

pm me if interested. im quite a distance from you but other then that dont hesitate to gimmie a shout.

taking it to a shop will be more than $800 per side.

Best thing to do IMO, junk it and buy something newer. You can get some great deals 99/00 HB civic, that will be cheaper than a body shop to fix your car. If you think this is bad I wonder what the underbody looks like? I can bet a Fred Fintstone in the near future.
