Question about 4th gen Hatches...
Were any of the 88-91 Hatchback Si's made anywhere other than Japan?
And were there external/internal differences in the different yearly models? (Si Only)
I ask because I went to go check out an '89 Si Hatch this weekend, and I noticed that the VIN didn't start with a J, but HG, which is the same as in my dad's 93 Si hatch, which was assembled in Alliston, ON.
My buddy has an 88 or 89 Si HB, and he has plastic panels in the back of his car that came stock. The panels are molded to fit 6.5" speakers, which also came stock on his car.
The car I went to see didn't have these openings in the trunk area...
At first I thought that this wasn't really an Si, that the guy wanted to screw me over.
But I checked the engine code (D16), there was a power sunroof, Si Seats (front and back), as well as Si guage cluser.
The door handles and mirrors weren't painted body colour, but I believe that they were only painted that way in the '90 or '91 models only, so thats not a concern.
Can anyone explain the VIN on the car, as well as the lack of rear speaker "trays"? Different year of production?

I'm pretty sure the 4th gens didn't come with speakers in the rear from the factory... at least my 90 and 89 Si didn't have them. I made my own 6x9 mounts in the 89 rear deck.
Regarding country of manufacture: I do believe that some were built in Alliston as well.

Its cool , I won't be buying the car...I wasn't 100% ready to buy it, so I figured that my feelings wouldn't change after buying the car. And the mileage was insane, 318K.
My buddy has the speaker panels in his car. I'm pretty sure it was an '88 Si, maybe '89. Theyre not on the rear deck, but rather on the sides of the rear deck, plastic moulding that is part of the other panels.
My buddy has it all : OEM Armrest, OEM Centre Console, OEM Front bra, rear speaker plastics... :fustrated
I did run a vehicle abstract, but it didn't list the actual model I think. It said it was an 89 3 door Honda Civic. And where it says -model- there were 3 Capital letters. Something like ASC or something like that, not DX, not Si, not CX...
Like I said before, I don't think that this was a BS car at all. The sunroof, engine, seats and guage cluser were all Si. I was just confused as to the rear speaker plastics. But if you say that your previous cars didn't have them either, then I guess its cool.
I'm still curious as to the VIN...

as for VIN. gotz to check, but Si's only had powered sunroof, and some may or may not have the front lip. Si interior had buckets, and in the engine bay, an Si will have resister box, because it was multi port instead of single port like lower trims.
but um..good luck with that. not sure about where they are built though...can't tel you that.

Actually SilverCRX they made all civics in Japan (in addition to Alliston and Ohio) Both my '89 and my '93 sedans have been built in Japan.
4g hatches and 5g hatches and coupes were built in Alliston
4g hatches and sedans and 5g coupes and sedans were built in Ohio
...but, if North American production couldn't keep up with demand they would ship more over.
