Notorious Wipers & Window trim Discoloration

Every six months I endup taking off my wipers, sand them to smitherines, put a couple of black coats of paint from a spray paint I picked up at CT (something about bumper paint), let them dry, and put them back.

So, WHY DO THEY KEEP PEELING OFF!? I suck at paint. A buddy tells me I have to lay down some primer first. Is there anything I have to put underneath and above the black paint coats to make them last? If so, where can I pick that up?

The window trim is in need of similar attention but I can't just take it off. How do I go about paint it? Do I just mask everything else and spray paint it on the spot or do I have to take it off somehow?

Thanks guys.

sand them down, prime them, do a good few coats of black paint and then clear them and u shoudnt have any problems

clear coating windshield wipers?

where do I get the primer from?

coreyhayman 25-Apr-2004 08:30 PM

ya y not clear coat them?.that way the paint will hold up alot better..get primer from ct

Alright, I'll try that.

How about the window trim - the black metal bar between the bottom of your driver window and the top of the door?

mourad, the window trim is rubber over stainless man... good luck! ryanhook painted his y0

as for the windshield wipers... I just noticed mine are a little faded too... 6 years old though... I won't sand anything down, just a good wash, leave over night. Then use a degreasing paint prep to wipe them down, and then lay down some exterior flat black. no clearcoat

Bruno,

For the wipers, I realized I had the "rubber, plastic, eurethane" bottle instead of the metal paint bottle, so I have to get the right paint first. Sanding them seems to do a pretty good job, I expose the metal underneath then give it two solid coats.

As for the trim, I really should take pictures to show what I'm talking about. I peel off the paint by hand, it is chipping on its own exposing the stainless below. I'm just wondering what a good masking technique is to make sure I don't get any paint on my door or window and only cover the trim.

Incidently, if you're up answering people's queries at 8:30am, what time do you get up!? :)

it's not paint that's chipping, its rubber.

try this, use an xacto blade to cut away all the black stuff over the stainless, then rough up the stainless with 600 grit paper. wipe everything down with rubbing alcohol. then use good quality masking tape and spend your time to make sure everythign is really well taped off. I'd tape off the entire side of that car really well. Then, wipe it down one more time and let it sit for a bit to make sure the rubbing alcohol evaporated. Then you can paint it flat black, or if you want you can use rubberized undercoating :shrugs: I have no idea how that would look though.

I go to bed around 1, and I get up around 7:30. :)

you can also remove the window trim and paint it

it makes it alot easier

You should make that into a sticky. Totally answered my question, I will post pictures of the before and after this weekend.

Does it even come off? It looked like there was nothing I can do to take it off, and if I did managed to, it looked like there is nothing I could to put it back. Have you successfully done this before? [/B][/Quote]

everything that can be assembled can also be disassembled :) so yes you can take it off, just be very very careful. I've removed these on a different car before, never a Honda :shrugs: it would be good if you had a factory service manual, it would describe it there.

I have the Hayne's manual but they skim through everything very quickly and offer little detail.
Personally, I don't have much confidence in my body work skills, so I will choose your first option.
Thanks.

there are little clips that hold in it.

roll down the window and tilt the moudling towards the glass

wiggle and it should start to come out

For the wipers use tremclad flat black rust paint. Just prep with alcohol before no need to sand etc. 3+ years and no flaking.

good advice!
