low to high beam conversion

Hi

I did a search and found out you can use 9005 (highbeam) instead on 9006 (lowbeam) with some modification

1) trimming the the tap
2) add another o-ring
3) cutting out the guide for the plug

now my question is....is it safe? would it cause melting....etc?

I want to make sure before I go ahead with this

by the way..I drive an 88 hatch

this is the easiest mod ever.. just shave it till it fits in without comeing off.. it wont melt anything since the head lights are glass.. and im pretty sure the only reason its brighter is cuz theres not paint stuff ont he tip of the highbeam lamp.. but i could be wrong.

I did this mod on my 89 acura legend. All you have to do is get a dremel, and remove one of the tabs inside the socket of the bulb.

Easiest mod eva!! It does make a difference with high beams as your lows. As for you harness melting. I've never knew anyone that had this happen. My friend also did this mod on his 97 accord, and he was fine too.

LMAO...lol. Its not the bulb he's worried about melting. Its the wiring harness that could melt because high beams use more power. High beams are brighter because it uses more power, it has nothing to do with tip of the bulb being coated or not.

By the way....I am going to get some 9005 this weekend. Would the regular 9005 from Crappy tire good enough? or some other recommendation? I don't want to spend too much really....just want more light with the best bang for the bucks deal.....

any 9005 will work...I used some "rice" lights cuz they are even brighter and I also had silverstars at one point

k well if they use more power im sure its not going to be enough to melt anything.. and im sure the paint on the tip has something to do with them being brighter.. why would they put it on the low beams if it didnt? and i didnt say the bulb was goign to melt i meant the case or what ever you want to call it wouldnt melt.

civicfighter you really dont need a diy for this.. if you take the high beam bulb out of the socket and unplug it and compare it to your low beam bult you can see what we are talking about. its really simple and takes maybe 10 minutes to do.

i have a 91 Civic Si and Yea its a real simple and easy to do mod. i searched the TCC forums and found out that it is interchangeable. i bought 2 brand new 9005 bulbs and the only difference is the o-ring and tabs. (9006 has 1 tab, 9005 has 2 tabs) i just shaved it off as much as possible, id ont even know why they have those tabs there cause there is another clip that holds the bulb on. I used a file and took me about 30mins to do 1 bulb, it is a pretty big difference, sorry i cant get u any pictures but u will see the difference.

ps. ppl say its brighter because the 9005 bulb doenst have the paint to cover teh rays as the 9006 bulb does, that is true but the 9005 bulb also is a 60watt bulb (i think) and the 9006 bulb is about 45 watts so it is actually a brighter bulb

they have those tabs there so you cant put the high beam bulb in the low beam place..

after running higher wattage bulbs (80/100 H4) on a Civic for 6 years the headlight harness crumbled when I tried to remove them from the bulbs. But it is easy to get new harnesses and splice them in, so no problems.
