Little thing about Rusting

as most people who own a civic would know..... there tend to be a spot where it rust on almost 80% of the civics out there... the back corner, right behind on the rear wheel, where it meets the bumper.

my question is how can you prevent that?... does the rust actually come from within the interior (bottom and other places) or does it actually rust from that place?.. I have asked a couple of my friends who own older civics, and they said that spot where it rust, the bumper isn't actually doing a good job of letting the water escape, so there are constantly always water there which tends to make it rust easily...

any help would be nice... and how many people own civics that has a rust there now?... good thing I have a 2000 car.. probably won't start rusing in another 5 yrs...

good point, but it's a rubber piece, not plastic

basically it's a piece of rubber lining that goes around the outside lip of the rear wheel well. all you need to do is grab one end of it and pull it off. the only reason why it's there is to prevent stones from chipping the paint but it does more harm than good because it traps salt and dirt behind it and that's where the rust starts.

Actually, I work at the Honda plant in Alliston and apparently there were small (too small for anyone to even see) deforms on the rear wheel arch on Civics, in this case we "stone" all the bodies with a sort of sanding block to see the DF, guess what this does... takes all the galvanizing off the metal.

Then again, my Civic was built in Japan and it's starting to rust there too, and that little rubber thingie has been gone for years, plus my car's only seen 4 winters; '92-'93, '93-'94, '00-'01 and '01-'02

i'm at 8 years and counting with no rust - i also rustproof every year, but i also take that rubber fender lip off every year before i go for rustproofing and i hose out any sand/silt etc that his built up - this is the stuff that builds up and traps moisture and salt in the winter. when i put the rubberstrip back on a fill it with some bearing grease to keep the moisture out. the rubber strip does a good job of keep the stone chips from the lip which is also wear rust can start. the rust proofing should be thin like rust check or krown so that it can soak betweent the inner and outer fenders because condensation can form there - just look at how many cars u see with rusted out trunk lids - thats from condensation forming inside the lid.

one other think u should do is - occasionally squirt some rust check down the hole where ur gas filler is - the reason is that every time u fill ur car with gas and a bit spills and goes down the drain hole it dissolves the rustproofing. just my 2 cents but the only proof is to see my car when its 10 or 15 years old with no rust i guess to show that the steps im taking are worth the trouble. this was my first new car after many old rusty cars - trust me its a lot easier to maintain something in good condition than to try and repair rust holes later. good luck
