DIY side markers

How did the hole in your fenders turn out for those who installed side markers? The pic below is someone who cut out his own hole. Can a bodyshop do a much better job and how much would they charge? The 2nd photo is a pic of an actual JDM fender used for comparison.

did you treat the edges of the cutout with touch-up paint?

aren't the sidermarker holes in jdm fenders somewhat sunken, so the sidemarker sits IN the hole, rather than looking like it sits on top of the body? that pic looks like the mounting surface for the light (the rusty-looking outline) is flush with the rest of the fender...

yeah, the hole does look a bit sunken like couple of millimeters or so. but then that part might just look sunken because it was covered up by the sidemarker before the fender got painted.

spracingsports has jdm fenders. maybe he can let us know.

they are not sunken in VW style, the sidemarkers sit on top of the fender

i wouldn't really think it matters what the hole looks like just as long as the side marker fits over it right and doesn't move once inside.

i did my own side markers and the cut out wasn't anything like the one in that pic you have... they used a tool called a nibbler i think its called to cut that out... i used a dremel so it was all straight lines.

to me, they'd look 1000x better if they were countersunk like vw ones. that's too bad - damnit!

the jdm sidemarkers have a black base which, when installed, looks like it sits on top of the body, kinda like a fridge magnet. if it was countersunk then all you'd see is the amber reflector plastic and no black base.

o well.

if your car is black then that base would be camouflaged and wouldn't look that bad. but yeah, the marker would look so much cleaner is that base was sunken into the fender.
