DIY - Painting Hub Caps
**DISCLAIMER - I don't no responsibility for your actions in anyway, please use as your own discretion**
I know it's not exactly the best article to put up but I figured since I was doing it, might as well put something up for everyone to see and for the newbies to learn from. Now I did not do professional job but I think decent enough.
Supplies:
1 can of Dupli Color paint for rims/hubcaps (color of your choice) Gunmetal in my case.
1 can of Duplic color clear coat (Any is fine)
1 can of primer
2000 Grit sand paper
Original Hub cap
Now to Begin
Step 1 - Sand down any scratches, curb marks, debris, and etc from Hub caps. Here you can decide if you wish to sand down the whole thing completely or not. I decided to just sand the deep scratches till all was smooth.
Step 2 - Wash those suckers down of course! Use dish wash detergent to really get that grime and crap of as well to remove any wax you may have on their. Paint ain't gonna stick with wax.
:working:
Step 3 - Once dry and clean, it's time for primer now you want to put several light coats of primer because it sticks on better. About 2 - 4 coats should do it depending on your liking but don't over do it now. Drying time is 10 minutes in between coats.
Step 4 - Now you can use the sand paper to make the surface a bit smoother if you find its not too liking but in my case I didn't bother because their hub caps.
Step 5 - The fun part. Painting! Now here you want to take your time if you want to do a good job. Now its recommended you do spray in parallel and DO NOT hold down the nozzle like a mad man. With the parallel idea in effect, I found it best to move around the hub cap in 4 ways so it's like I'm doing box painting just so you get the paint on evenly and in the little hole sections of the hub cap as well. You should definitely be putting on light coats and waiting at least 15 mins in between coats for them to settle. About 5 - 10 light cloats should take care of it.
Step 6 - Almost there! Clear coat is optional but helps make it a bit shiney and protects the paint. Before applying clear coat, give paint about 1- 2 hours to completely dry but no more (According to instructions on can). Once ready, you want to apply about 2 - 3 coats waiting about 10 mins in between. Once complete, allow at least 24 hours before doing anything else with them.
Step 7 - Once you have let them dry, at this stage you can marvel at the job you have done or continue on with further details including rinsing, slight sanding, and rubber compound. But since their hub caps, good enough for me and I am going to slap these suckers back onto the car and marvel at my job.
There you have it, overview of painting hub caps, wish I remembered to take more pics though, kept forgetting. LoL Feel free to let me know if I forget any steps.
