DIY: Custom Grill
well i just redid my diy custom grill i did a few months ago. i replaced the grill to a better quality one.
I thought to myself... hey why not... create a diy... i know its bin done b4... but why not again, some people don know how to use the search button. DIY for 96-99 Civics... Remember this is a DIY i am not responsible for you messing up... but ask questions if needed. Also, this is a second DY i did for the grill, so a dremil might have to be used to cut the center out of your stock oem grill as mine was already done in my first time.... DIY Duration: Approx 30 min to finish Materials Needed: Dremil - if not already cut Marker Screwdriver Tin Snips Gutter Guard - Found at home depot (shown) http://img126.exs.cx/img126/1443/4400.jpg http://img126.exs.cx/img126/4787/material.jpg 1 Unscrew the Grill from the bumper - 4 push pins under hood, and 4 screws on bumper, you must remove the bumer to do this - Cut out center if needed with dremil. http://img126.exs.cx/img126/8954/4398.jpg 2 Remove Grill - Duh... http://img126.exs.cx/img126/7992/4399.jpg 3 Unscrew the outer portion from the inner portion. http://img126.exs.cx/img126/7484/4401.jpg 4 Like So - Ooohhhh, Ahhhh..... http://img126.exs.cx/img126/949/4403.jpg 5 these next couple steps i find easier the way i do it, makes it cleaner in the end. 7 Mark the perimiter of the grill with the marker.
Then cut with Tin Snips, now children ask your parents for permission if not old enough... lol http://img126.exs.cx/img126/4075/4406.jpg 8 Once cut remove the screws and re-attach outer portion and -rescrew http://img126.exs.cx/img126/9886/4407.jpg 9 - Complete http://img126.exs.cx/img126/8611/4408.jpg 10 Now just re-place onto car... http://img126.exs.cx/img126/7302/4409.jpg Before First DIY http://img126.exs.cx/img126/5390/front7.jpg After First DIY http://img126.exs.cx/img126/1766/beforegrill.jpg After Third DIY (latest) http://img126.exs.cx/img126/4721/aftergrill.jpg Whatever grill you choose will determin the look of the grill... thicker mesh will give a brighter look, a thinner mesh will give a darker look... There are Black, grome, thick and thin meshes available, choose what you desire... |
Nice work mayn! Looks pretty good! Always good to see that ppl actually work on their own cars instead of paying for it all the time!

Hey, looks real nice. Is there a way to re-attacth the emblems or does that take away from the customized look of it?
It looks good as is, I was just curious if it was no longer an option once you made the change. |
yeah man it was dirt cheap to do, and if you can do the stuff on your car yourself why not...
you can re-atach the emblem if you want, alot of people put the civic on the front grill, or leave it plain, your grill do what you want... thnx for the comments, as i do diy's i bill post them... |
Looks good, why don't you try to get a colour matched grill? It would look betteR.

well, the trim on my car is chrome,
and hell everyones got the type r grill, i like the look of the painted grill, but i was like hmm, maybe i keep it this way and i like it, most wouldn't keep it but knowing that i would be different... |

the gutter guard at home depot is like $3 just go into the gutters section and it'll be there, in a 7" x 4' peice i think...
if you don't like the chrome look of the mesh you can paint it... |

what paint would you recommend using to paint the mesh?
I dont want chrome but rather blk....so any paint that will sustain the color and prevent fading in color/rusting? |
you could use n e paint you wanted,
you can use steel wool to scuff up the surface of the grill to get rid of chrome plate then paint it, you can prime if you want, not needed cause its so easy to do, basically if somethinghappends to the finish, just re-do it, but get something thats good for the exterior rust paint thats available in spray cans is good... |
