2 questions on paint and rust

Hey,

2 quick questions:

I. About to put my all seasons back on for winter and I wanted to paint my hubcaps/wheelcovers and rims black. These rims are the stock on my all season that is covered by the hubcaps/wheelcovers. What paint should I use?

II. Rust is starting to build up above my left rear wheel. What's a cost effective way to prevent it from spreading other than major body work?

thanks!

you cant really do anything about it without either grinding it down to bare metal but if your just looking to put a "coating" on it to somewhat help i'd recommend "Rust Check"

For actual rim, just pick up few cans of duplicolour and some clear. I did my brothers rims, came out nice. For hubcaps, I'm not sure if how well duplicolour would stick. Just go to crappy and find paint for plastic.
To do this, sand the rims/hubs down to eliminate oils/dirt/rust and spray away. Do many light coats rather than 1-2 thick coats.

For your second question, grab some sandpaper, primer and a can of paint and clear. Sand the spot down, spray some primer, sand that down as it says in instructions and paint. Then clear coat it. If your paint is older you will have to wet sand the clear coat. It would be a good idea to wax/polish the whole car before winter anyways, and that way the paint would match. Otherwise use rust check or whatever its called. My buddy did that the whole winter last year, its thick/clear oil, just keep applying it once a week and rust will not ******.
Good luck.

if your rims are steel clean them really well, get out all of the brake dust and grease. if there is any rust on the wheel, clean that up as well till you see no more rust. then just use tremclad or any rust paint and put on about 2 or 3 thick coats. i did my steel rims that way and they turned out fine. as for hub caps. if they are the plastic ones from crappy tire that just snap on i wouldnt try painting them. the paint will just flake off and they will look like **** because paint doesnt really stick to them well, but you can try anyway. if you still want to just scuff them with some fine sand paper or scotch bright. remove any flakes of old paint then clean and de grease them really well. also try to find a paint for plastics.

now as for the rust on you quarter panel. depends on how bad the rust is. if the rust isnt that deep i would just go with the rust check. if its deep and the paints really starting to bubble. you should clean it with a die grinder and a medium sanding disc. once you have clean metal, treat it with metal prep, you can usually get it from napa or any paint supply. be careful when using it is an acid use gloves and safety glasses. this will dissolve the rust and clean it out of the pits. prime the area then fill with bondo till its smooth and even with the rest of the panel. then prime with a filler primer this will remove any imperfections the paint with colour ande clear but make sure you wash the car before painting so theres no dust no if you want youre paint to blend better i suggest you take it to a paint shop where they have the proper equipment.

it sounds harder and more expensive then it really is. i hope this was helpful
