painting your own rims
 

hey everyone
i have a pair of 1.6 rims which are already painted bronze but its a really bad job.
so i was thinking of doing it all over.
but i just wanted to know which type of sandpaper i should use and where i would be able to find rim paint and everything
i tried acouple places and couldn't find anything!

I'm not good with grit's so I won't suggest what sandpaper to start with. If wheel is smooth and you just want to strip the paint use "Polly Super Stripper" or Aircraft paint remover. Both work the same, slap it on .. wait then scrape off old paint with a plastic scraper or steel wool.

Start with like 240 grit, and then go to like 400, and then to like 600 or 800 grit. As for paint, there is no real Rim paint, you can use what ever kind you want. I use dupli color engine paint, but you also need to get primer and clear coat as well. Try to make sure you get are the paint and clear from the same company.

If you want to sand it, start with something like a 300-grit. Once the paint is almost off and you are getting down to the primer, switch to a 350 or 400 grit paper. Its a pain so maybe the paint stripper is a good idea. But just be careful to try and get as little as possible on the rubber. That will dry the rubber out and cause it to crack.

first off there is rim paint and you are able to get it at crapy tire use dupli colour rim paint n grit paper start off with 240 then u can go either 400 then 600 i wouldnt bother too much with 800 on ur rims though not neccesary then after ur done sanding paint away but dont be stingy on ur sanding most imortant part .....I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE

painting your rims with engine paint is so fail. buy rim paint from parts source for 9 bucks a can.. 1 should be enough for all 4 rims.... theres a nice diy on here that i have used in the past to paint rims b4.

and btw only start with 240 if ur rims are in really bad shape..otherwise its a waste of time

i recently did a set of rims. i can honestly say this, if ur a perfectionist and ur rims are not perfect, be prepared to put 2 hours per rim in prep time. pm me for any pictures or info

Duplicolor rim paint FTW

take tires off, buy paint stripper. was using today on valve cover and that stuff is magic! lol it took off the paint very easy, and saved me many hours of sanding.i used a spray can which worked well, you can also buy it in liquid form and brush it on.
then you just need to prime/paint/clear.

taking the tire off=waste of time... take index cards and stick em firmly in the lip and go all the way around and ur good

^^thats if you are sanding the rims. But if you decide to spray bomb with paint stripper, the acid will eat through paper. Unless you are using a brush then you can be a lot more careful but even so when you will be whiping them off, you are more than likely to get some of that crap on the tire. Also watch your hands/arms. Got a tiny spot on my arm and it burned quite bad hahaha.

you would still want to sand the rims down anyway cuz the stripper isnt going to get everything off them n also so the paint has something to adhere to.. and i used the index cards and it worked jus fine for me, didnt touch the tires but i did get some on my hand and yes it does burn like a bitch.
