DIY type-r grille HOW TO
well here it is..... how to make a custom type-r/SiR grille.....no pics though :(
when i refer to grille: that is the black part when i refer to trim: that is the part that i the color of your car. i used this mesh from Home depot. it cost like 7 bux Construction Metals, Inc. KWIKMESH utility screen roll 1/8" galvanized expanded metal roll 6"x25' being 25' you have planty in case of mistakes or later road damage STEP 1: remove fron facia 2 phillips screws in fenderwells 7 plastic fasteners across top 2 10mm bolts underneath removing grille from facia 4 phillips screws underneath 2 metal clips on sides removing trim from grille 8 phillips screws STEP 2: cutting louvers from inside the grille *DO NOT cut away the outside of the grille, as it is needed to bolt the whole thing back together!* (a blade from a hacksaw works very well to cut the plastic, preferrably a fine toothes blade, like a metal cutting blade) this is verey straightforward... cut out what you dont want ... and thats pretty much it for now. you can also finish sand where the cuts were to make it look that much better STEP 3: cutting mesh for grille cut a cardboard template to cut the real mesh after mesh is cut, slots in the mesh will need to be cut so that slits of the trim may pass through (you will see what i mean when you get there) the top of the mesh screening needs to be bent a bit.... toward the trim piece sandwitch the mesh in between the grille and trim pieces, then bolt it up to make sure its fits properly. if it fits well you are ready to spray paint it. you can paint it whichever color you want, i used krylon ultra flat black. STEP 4: reinstall now all thats left is bolting the thing back together and bolting the grille to the facia and the facia to the car.....YOU'RE DONE!! |
do you like the results? or do you regret doing it? just curious... I wanna buy a stright OEM type R one
|
it actually tuned out WAY better than i thought it would...... but there is a little hole in the bottom of the mesh on mine, cuz i cut the hole for the slot a little to big... its okay though i can cut a new piece anytime, and it aint really noticeable.
a oem one would be sweet but im broke  i say you try this first and if you dont like it then buy the oem one.... cuz if you like this better you will save all that money! |
pics!

Has anyone seen this KWIKMESH in Canada? (preferably southern ontario) I've tried both Home Depot and Cashway but without prevail. I currently using an old skool satellite dish mesh (looks great) but it got ruined after a snow plow truck used my bumper as a ramp...ahhh
Let me know Thx |
I did this today at selective sound/strickly details with some of the guys there. It was fairly easy. I'll post pics of everything and how I did it once I get my digi. cam.
Also, did you guys keep those philips screws that screw the bottom of the grill to the bumper? We cut that off since it was attached to the part we took out. Did any of you guys have any problems with it coming loose with this the 5 flathead fasteners on the top? I think I'm going to put some silicone on the bottom of the grill to make sure its on good. Any ideas/comments about what I should use/do? |
Any pics spracingsports?

By the way, this only works for '97-'98 Civic, the '96 I had was all one piece.

Ya this works great I did it b4 but the only thing i did't like is cutting the mesh perfectly, its a pain and i actually cut my self doing it :(
