DIY: Cleenin Engine Bay

b4 i start, this is only a guideline, and i'm not resposible for anything goin worng wit your car, use at you own discretion

there has been discussion and descriptions, but no pictures, so i decided to cleen out the durty ass engine bay and take sum pictures here we go

this is realy the only step thats critical- coverin everythin (i prob din have to cover the stock airbox, but i did anyways:

http://tinypic.com/5le1pf

Dont forget the alternator:

http://tinypic.com/5le334

when everything is covered, spray a lil water all over the engine bay, and after bout a mintue, spray on a heavy coat of cleaner, i used GUNK (citrus powered :naughty:

http://tinypic.com/5le36c

now if ur engine bay looks lyk ass then the tooth brush wont cut it

http://tinypic.com/5le3cy

Neither will this brush thing

http://tinypic.com/5le3jo

so u'r gna have to get serious, and bring out the steel wool

http://tinypic.com/5le3pd

Gettin better:

http://tinypic.com/5le3qu

now wash it all down completelty trying not to focus the water on any sensors, or belts

Final result:

http://tinypic.com/5le3yq

yes i kno its not so cleen u could eet off it, i jus wanted to make it half decent cause i'm selling it soon

make sure to remove the plastic bags b4 driving the car, and after rinsing it down completely start it and let the water evaporate, its not smoke its steam, and if u'r that paranoid sit in the car and watch the temp gauge, you car will smell lyk oven cleaner for a while but it will go away

and there you go, frum durtly lik sh*t, do half decent, it took me bout 45 mins, if u take u'r time u could make it reely cleen and nice and all that other nice stuff

hope that helps..happy cleaning

p.s. if any1 has anything to add or correct feel free.

resize! but i give you a  for covering the alternator. i did this 2 weeks ago and didn't cover my alternator and my car crapped out of me for a week. just upload pics on tinypic.com, no need to register or anything. i cleaned mine but didn't bother scrubbing the valve cover.

imported_Mischev 01-Jun-2005 09:00 PM

lol mine looked horrible, and the cars bin in the fam for 8 yrs, and this was the 1st tym sum1 cleened under the hood.

Looks good, is that an EK?

Valve cover is a lot different than mine.

Nova_Dust 01-Jun-2005 09:18 PM

Looks nice. For the past 2 washes, I didn't cover the alternator. I should next time.

Steel wool is a good idea. I never thought of that. I used brush and I was getting splashes all over my face, afraid of GUNK eating away my precious skin :P

Good stuff.

ye its an ek hatch , i did a swap (stock d16y7), and that engine came frum japan...according to the mechanic

imported_GoldBadge 02-Jun-2005 09:29 AM

It looks like an older valve cover.

Nice write up; DIYs are always great, no matter what the task. Maybe I'll get around to doing this when I have some time.

Just to re-iterate, cover up these parts:

Battery
Distributor
Alternator
Air Box (optional, but not a bad idea)

I would be careful when spraying around the fluid reservoirs (and belts as mentioned), just in case.

Good job! It looks much better than before. Reminds me I gotta do mine some time soon, its real dirty. Thanks for the write-up and pics!

Mine looks like that all the time :)

cibs 02-Jun-2005 01:35 PM

it's pretty clean but not super clean... try simple green...

every time i've done it all i covered was my intake and i've never had a problem :shrugs: *knock on wood...

presoak, simplegreen (no scrubbing involved!!!!) let sit for about 5 min and then rinse off and you're good to go!!

either way good job, looks better than it did before

civicnation 04-Jun-2005 04:30 PM

woodbine toyota does it for me for 20$ and it comes out brand spanking new. and they dont put on all that dressing crap that attracts dust as soon as you drive the car off the lot.

Cynikal.Mindset 04-Jun-2005 04:42 PM

lol...I used to use tire foam, but anything like that works...my 1st gen crx engine bay was uber clean

Gallagher 04-Jun-2005 07:45 PM

Haha, I use it all !

Leather cleaner, tire foam, all of it !

When I use WD40, you have to make sure that your car is cold and let it sit for abuot 30mins :D

PS: only use this stuff when your engine is already pretty clean, like mine
