on rough areas I would use 250 grit around and finish with 300-400. for just clearcoat problems use straight 300-400.

wetsand with a bucket of water and hose and a foam sanding pad like the one described in my diy above

damn this diy helps me a lot, i juz painted my back & front bumper milano red, look so nice! no more pink color fading.
