A'Pex-i RSM Installation How-to

I installed mine over the Easter weekend. The new gen Apexi RSM isn't the most popular mod out there, but I thought I'd take a stab at posting a how-to for your information anyway. I'll be suggesting a method that differs somewhat from what's in the instruction manual.

Finding the right wiring diagram:
For 99-00 Canadian Sir/Dx/Ex/Lx/Cx (b16a2 or d16y7), the diagram to look at should be H-7a. I have the Helm's manual to verify that the diagram is correct. For other engines you need to locate the ground, vss, icm, IG-P1 wires to the ecu.

To cut or not to cut:
My hands were shaking as I was stripping the rubber off the speed sensor wire, then I decided to stop. For those (like me) who do not need to disable the speed limiter, there's a cleaner way to connect the RSM to the ecu. At the end of each of the thousands of wires that connect to the ecu plug, there's an area of metal that's exposed. That's where I connected the RSM wires to the ecu's.

Step by step...
 

Identifying the components:
ecu wire - a single electric wire to the ecu
ecu cable - the bunch of ecu wires wrapped by electical tape
RSM wire - one of the black-ground/red-IG/yellow-RPM/purple-Speed wires
RSM cable - the cable that connects the RSM to the ecu (male plug at one end and loose wires at the other)

Steps:
- Unplug negative terminal on battery
- Remove passenger side lower panel covering the ecu
- Tape the RSM cable to the ECU cable (do not tape the loose wires, make sure the RSM wires can run all the way to the ECU plug), or secure the RSM cable somewhere so the RSM wire connections won't need to sustain the weight of the cable, I found the former way easiest and most effective.
- Pull out the appropriate ECU plugs (or unscrew the ECU mount and pull out the ecu)
- Insert RSM wires into the holes behind the ECU plugs according to the wiring diagram (so for those holes you'll have two wires going into each of them. You'll find that the RSM wires will stay in place once inserted. If you are able to pull the ecu wire pins out of the ecu plug, then just wrap the ends of the RSM wires around the pins and insert them back into the plug - this would the the ideal method.)
- Carefully connect the ecu plugs back to the ecu
- verify that all RSM wires are still connected, and no wires are shorted (very important!)
- Re-connect negative terminal
- start engine

If everything seems to run fine, then turn off the engine, plug the RSM to the RSM cable, turn key to "battery", configure the RSM (and recalibrate the G-sensor if applicable), start the engine and verify that both speed and rpm readings are correct.

Tips...
 

- do it outside of the garage in day light, you'll need all the light you can get!
- follow the original instructions if you're planning on integrating the RSM permanently.
- use a shop manual to verify you're connecting the right wires
- the flattest (and most convenient) spot to put your g-sensor turns out to be inside the cup holder, otherwise, you need to cut the provide foam to make sure the sensor is leveled.
- It's unlikely that vibrations in the car will disconnect the wires, despite the unsecure connections. Unfortunately I cannot make any guarantee that they won't. So use this how-to at your own risk, and verify the connections from time to time.
- be prepared to engage your body in a very uncomfortable position for about 1 to 2 hours. my right shoulder is still sore. well, hope reading my how-to will cut your installation time to minimal. :)
