VISA you suck

Rant

So yestereday, the wife and I go to TD and dump a sizable amount of money onto our VISA. $18500 to be precise. A few hours later we go to use the VISA to pay for dinner and it gets declined. The wife calls their customer service and after being on hold on and off for about 30 minutes, they tell her that they can't give her any info and that she is supposed to call the Payment Department during business hours. WTF???

Online, the VISA statement shows the payment and balance.

I'm guessing that because of the large payment, there might be some kind of security check, but they could at least tell us that.

I told the wife to go off on them when she talks to them today.

I had the same thing happen on my Mastercard.. but really, do you think theves are going to be PAYING it off for you??.. lol

BTW, WTF did you buy??.. lol

Whatever the problem is, they should tell us.

The card was used mostly to buy a house full of furniture. We are consolidating some debts and have been dumping large amounts of $$$ on our debts/student loans/etc.

18500, tv.

this is nothing unusual mike. a transaction that large must have trigerred a security flag which makes the account go under immediate monitoring. the purpose of this is that they dont know if this was a fake payment which was made only to withdraw funds back again from the account. (like the empty envelope fraud with ABM transactions)

i once paid a sum of $20K but i called the bank first just so that there are no issues. the number is on teh back of the car and they should resolve this for you 24/7.

I figured it was something like that, but would it have been that hard to tell us. It was a certified cheque and the bak teller didnt mention anything about it.

Steve, the TV was $2700. The one I want for the new place is ALOT more.

i usually call with my phone before buying something big while i'm in line for it.

i have my cell phone registered as a contact number so that it's a trusted source when they see the caller ID.

a guy once accidentally rang up $40,000 instead of $400.

They let the $400 go through after the first failure, but they called my cell after the fact.

I've had them block my card on a golf course in fredericton.

If you're travelling, and you didn't buy the flight with your card (ie drove there) it's good to call ahead as well.

They're doing it to avoid big hassles in case you are being scammed. I don't think it's unreasonable, especially because they are liable for fraudulent use, not you.

RFID is bad for business, it's easy to steal people's info. Just walk into a techie convention and walk through big tight crowds of people...

I just spoke to one of the teller's at our other bank. She saids its a normal proceedure, but that the teller at the bank where we paid the $$$ should have told us about the potential problem and advised us to call VISA.
