Trying to figure out CD Writer

Ok,

I am running windows 98 and I have adaptec gold. I have tried to use Nero 6 aswell and i still have the same problem when attempting to burn cd's. What happens is the cd will start being burned and then the write speed will just drop from 4x to 2x to 1x and then it just stops writing and i end up with a useless cd. How can I go about troubleshooting this problem? Do you think its the actual cd writer or what are the other culprits?

What specs are the machine?

Shut down any applications running in bottom right corner..

Turn off or disbale antivirus..

Sounds like your getting killed on disk access..

please dont tell me u have some whack *** system and tryin to burn direct mp3s into an audio cd...cuz that will eat alot of ram and if u dont have alot in the first place...well there it all goes and out comes a coaster

try converting audio to wav first then burn an audio cd...also defrag your computer and as said before disable antivirus and screensaver during the burn process and dont try to use the computer during burning...and if all else fails use an older version of nero like nero 5 or sumthin

thats what i'd say, on my comp at home, i couldn't have anything running, not explorer or even messenger, if i did i would just get acouple songs done and it would quit.

i've never liked nero that much, i've always used cd creator platnium, downloaded off of kazza, works perfect...as long as nothing is running.

chris can you try burning a TEST cd and see if it works, bypasing the physical portion?

have you tried using the disk speed check in nero to see what kinda flow of data your getting?

could very well be the burner I had a similar problem on my ricoh i had a few years ago and it was dead.

i did the test thing wit nero and it was around 30-40kbps or something?

Im trying to think, im pretty sure the Test cd worked and then i would do the actual cd and it fucked up.

Maybe what i need is a 40x external cd writer?

nope didnt do that......it was the test for the cd speed or something like that. I already deleted nero, so i cant do the test again.

Should i try doing a cd with the antivirus and task scheduler off?

external 40X requires firewire setup, or USB 2.0 or faster...most sytems stock are USB 1.0

I really have no idea what to do, I guess I will try burning a cd with the antivirus and everything in the bottom right turned off or gone and see how that goes.
