Smart key, keyless ignition, etc... A test

So my wife's Mini Cooper is equipped with a keyless entry and ignition system called Comfort Access. It's just a key fob with no actually key. The doors will unlock and the car will start if the fob is near the car, within 5 feet.

The test...

Say the wife leaves the car running and some Hamilton hood-rat decides to go for a spin. I was wondering how far the car will go with no key in it and what happens. Will the car just shut itself off?

Test in progress. I will be back with the results.

my guess is 10ft from the driver's seat

i always thought these keyless entry systems are kinda stupid, what if u keep ur keys close to ur door of the house, and they were close enough to unlock the car? can a hoodlum just take ur stuff from ur car then w/o even trying to break in then?

Edit, i want full video and a report when ur done. =p

it would be dangerous for the car to turn off once it's out of the fob's range

looking forward to ur results

Niiice.....Do it!

Once had a Dodge Dakota. It had the chip built into the key. Sooo...I went and made a copy of the key @ CT, not knowing that the engine would only stay running for about 5 secs.....I was so confused!! lol

I unlocked and started the car with the key fob in hand. I got back out and put the key fob in my garage and drove down my street. My street is perfectly straight and according to the trip odometer, 0.7 km from my driveway to the end where it meets a busier main road.

I got to the end, so 0.7 km and the car was still running. I didnt want to proceed onto the main road for safety reasons if the car did suddenly shut off.

Im very surprised. I thought maybe 100m tops.

That sucks.

700m is crazy...Any idea of what the wireless connection is? A cordless phone can go something like 100m?

Try putting the FOB in the basement. I demand more results!! lol

Start the car, keep it in the garage. lock the garage, drive away with the key in your car, drive far, come back, is it still running?

Easier than driving the car away, just take the key away.

i guarantee its what my previous post is. A buddys dad drove away with his benz from oakville to milton without the FOB without realizing that the valet boy still had it, so he drove all the way back, and no the car doesnt turn its self of thats just stupid. Simple test, start it without the FOB, drive it, park it and turn it off, then try to turn it back on without the FOB it wont start!

Did it beep at you or anything?

when i drove my supervisor's Murano, it beeped at me when i walked 10ft away from the car. dont remember if it turned off or not, but then again, i was in Park, and not drive.

But I really wouldnt know if the car shut itself off. It might be different if the car wasnt actually being driven instead of parked. The car probably knows its parked.

I did that and it started right back up again.

Nope. The car has a small screen that shows different things. It showed a key with a line through it when I drove away.

Im probably going to try it again, but along one of the seclueded country roads near me. Im going to put my bike in the back so I dont have to walk a few k's to get home if it shuts off on me.

Other owners on the Mini forum I belong to are wondering what my results are.

It might be, or may not be. Sure you would know if it shut itself off. When you get back, it's off. (you think it would start itself up again?) You'd have to drive it to the garage.

Just saying. it's an easy test. yo know you want to find out...

Lexus as well. I did valet parking for a while and a few people have taken the fob with them when they leave the car and you don't realize its gone until you go to put the tag on it. But yeah, a car has never turned off on me while driving without the fob.

That's a good idea, leave a running car in a locked garage. A lot of good stories start out that way. heh
