Setting up a webcam....

So, i would like to set-up a webcam from my cottage, so I can view it from my house.

Any ideas on how to do this? I would like to it be used to keep an eye on our huts, boats, property, etc.

Almost like a streaming video?

I believe you would have to have live feed there so it can have the source for the video to go through, but i could be very wrong.

you'd need internet, a computer, a tv tuner card and a slingbox to be able to view it from anywhere

First, you do need the internetz... or a dail-in , setup a modem based server you can log into from remote. (not hard to do)

(I'd do the dailup) Depending on where your cottage is, you may not get the internet up their through conventional means.

Once you've decided on your connectivity, the rest is easy.

you can have your cottage push images to a website, or you can look into some of the systems X10 has to offer.

No, I do not have the net at the cottage. That can be solved pretty simply though.

It would most likely be one of those rogers wireless internet sticks.

I can easily get a computer up there.

You don't need a sling box.

Is there any software you know of that can allow you to turn it on remotely?

What would be the major problem?

Almost all web cams come with capture software, there is freeware too. 0
A cheapo system, or laptop, $10 web cam, unless you want one with a little IR on it. How robust of a system do you want? multiple cam?

Most cams are accessible only within the network they are plugged into. Cottage and home would not be on the same network.

p.s. look into the cost of running the rogers 24/7

What you can look for is a camera that pushes images to the web, or email. Most don't need to be attached to a computer just a router.

.. look at your monthly bill... Bell/Rogers, 24/7 connectivity...

You can access your modems ip from any network, anywhere, at anytime.

If not, the above mentioned slingbox would be a fail. My ftp server and http server that I use for clients would be a fail too, it's not, they access from all over the world.

The cam is going to be outside in -40 degree weather, with rain, snow, ice, windy, etc.

It can either be a picture cam, or a video cam. I'm assuming the cost will obviously be different, but how much?

Currently, we do not have a telephone line setup for the cottage. Maybe bump it to someone elses line?

You'd need to get a cam that's in a weather proof housing, or keep it inside the cottage, through a window.

Find out if the Rogers stick works up there, Do you disconnect the power when you close the cottage?

Cottage is never fully closed. Some power is left on for fridge, and baseboard heaters (soon to be in-floor heating).

How about this..things you need
- Internet
- Wireless Router
- Internet Camera (http://dlink.ca/products/category.asp?cid=60&sec=0)

a. setup the router
b. mount the internet camera (indoor, outdoor)
c. Install the software (SYNC both router and internet camera together)
d. enabled remote connection to the camera(IPadress)..

depends on the camera you get..you can move the camera around..
