I had, what I called the 55 gallon tank of death, with an industial size sucker fish (14" lol) and extremely large apple snail.
It was overcrowded with too many big fish.

I had 2 oscars,2 piranhas, 2 Florida Garr Pikes, 4 chiclids, 2 Ropefish, and four lobsters on the bottom that always ripped each other's arms off. All survived together for two years except for the ropefish and lobster. One ropefish got stuck in the filter and one died of unknown casues, I assume stress.

The tank took alot of matenience and I had a serious EHEIM filter.

40 Gal fresh water aquarium for me. I just want to point out that this hobbie might be some work such as cleaning and maintanance. If you're too lazy about it, like I had been when i first got one, your fishies will drop like flies lol.

i've got a 160 gallon with Frontosa

The 3D backgrounds are nice but they're not worth the hassle, grime gets stuck behind them and water doesnt circulate, but most importantly they take up a lot of space in the tank

Ive been keeping fish my whole life and currently have 3 tanks a home:

10gal - 6x glolite teras 4x amano shrimp (unfiltered!)
5gal - sunfish
2gal - 3x neon tetra & amano shrimp

Im also the livestock specialist at petcetera, mississauga, so I take care of all the fishes there. Its not true that fishtanks require a lot of maintenance.. maybe at first, but once your aquarium is established and balanced, it should be somewhat self maintained. I clean my aquariums about once a month and although acidity goes up, the ammonia levels stay at 0ppm. Live plants help to keep water clear and oxygenated. Anyone need any advice/hookups, come talk to me at Petcetera! Im there every sunday only.

p.s. use Cycle! lotsa cycle..it really works.

Question -

I had the standard starter tank many years ago.. I hated cleaning the water....

The filter is there, but you still need to replace the water weekly/bi-weekly or whatevre it was..

What solution exists to minimize how often you need to replace the water?

i say once a month. If you can get chemicals to control the acidity pph levels and all that that might help reduce how many times u change the water. Plus when u change it only change about 1/4 or 2/4 of the tank not the whole tank. Get some plecos too help eat away at the aleggy
