A new scam? and... is this even a scam?

i'm pretty sure this is a scam but here is how it goes

you'd post a car for sale

someone overseas will contact you saying all these stories why they're overseas and they'd come back to toronto blah blah blah

They'd ask you to subtract your amount from a bigger cheque they're sending (necessarily because they're buying another thing too)

I've gotten this twice already... i'm 99% sure it's a scam.
This last guy is saying he's buying some property so he wants me to take out my amount and send the rest to a next guy, lmao
why doesn't he just write 2 seperate cheques? lol

i just want to know how this'd be considered a scam...
i mean, do they actually even send you a cheque?

Yes it is a scam. I saw it posted exactly as how you explained it. It was on a used car website, like leasebusters.ca or somthing....I can't remember as it was a while back. This scam has been going on for at least 2 years now.

what? how does it work? you could put up a lot of fake ads with fake names. if they send you a cheque, take it to money mart and keep it all yourself

More than likely, you never get a cheque, and depending on what personal info they are asking for, it could lead to identity theft.

this is not new....and its not just limited to cars. this happens with literally everything that goes up for sale on the internet. they will ask you for the personal info...promise to send you a bigger cheque telling you to deduct the price and keep the rest.....basically all they want is your personal info. for some malicious use.

Bruce...the cheque might arrive....but it will be a bogus one. the cheque will only arrive if you give your personal info like name and address etc.

it will be a bogus name and your neighbours address... so it's okay if they steal it.

How do you plan on cashing the cheque if one is actually sent?

easy. if one is actually sent, you take it into a moneymart place with a fake ID.

it clears you have the money in your acct... a few weeks later they discover that it's a forgery

THEN they want the money back - after your check which actually had money has cleared to the other persons acct...
