Exclamation I Need Some Input - PLEASE!

Guys/Gals, please take some time to help me out, I really appreciate it.

Its not car related- but school related, but I don't think that matters too much.

I am in my OAC (Gr. 13) year in high school. I have a pretty heavy course load this semester - Calculus, Algebra and Geometry, Chemistry and Physics - arguably the 4 toughest OAC courses available. Because I was good at (and enjoyed) mathematics throughout high school, I decided to go into something that has to do with engineering. I first considered Civil, then Mechanical, and finally, Electrical. However, last year when I took physics, it turned out that for some reason I had a hard time grasping alot of the material. This was honestly the first course that I have ever taken that I simply "didn't get". However, as mentioned above, since I enjoyed math, I decided to take physics in OAC, since it would be necessary if I wanted to go into engineering (in University). I ran into the same problem as last year -I DONT GET IT!!! I don't know why, but physics neither makes sense to me, nor some of the stuff we discuss just doesn't click in my head. Now, as many of you may remember, if you wanted to drop a course in Highschool, and become a part time student (someone with less than three courses in daytime schedule), you were only able to drop a course at midterm.

This is where the problem arises. Midterm is this friday. I found out last wednesday that neither I, nor anyone else would be allowed part-time student status this year, why? - the principal told me he had been in a meeting where he was told not to allow any part time students. My reaction is complete outrage! I NEED to drop this course. I'm thinking realistically, say even if i finish with a 65% (still highly doubtful), I have NO CHANCE whatsoever to get into university next year, since the mark will show up on my transcript. Next year pretty much every school will look at all your courses, not only the ones that are prerequisites. (Due to the double -cohort). I decided that I can't settle for this, and decided to take some action. I'm writing a letter to the superintendent of schools, among other individials, asking them to consider this matter, and allow part-time students this semester. My reasons for this right now are: (briefly)
a) Very short notice of this new rule, making it quite unfair to students.
b) Had I been informed before I signed up for the course that there will be problems in dropping it, I wouldnt have signed up for it in the first place.
c) Specifically in reference to the double-cohort, universities will be looking at ALL marks, not only prerequisites, which would no doubt hinder my chances of getting into University.
d) ????

Please, everyone I need ideas. Anything that you may think of that might be worth me putting into the letter, please reply. This matter is VERY important to me, and I thank each and every one of you for your input.

Matt.

I feel your pain man. I am also dealing with this double cohort ****. And the truth is, they aren't making very many spaces at schools. There isn't enough funding to. Unless they double tuition next year, than a lot of people are gonna be left out in tthe cold holding their dicks, or nipples. p

I left highschool in grade 12 this past June. I still need 2 credits to graduate, but I have everything i need. I just need these 2 to make up my 30. I didn't get anything out of highschool in the last 2 years. Teachers don't want to teach, and there's nothing there that I wanted to learn. I was already accepted to go this fall to Seneca but decided not to go. Now, hopefully, after taking a semester off and seeing how shitty the real world is without an education, and working **** jobs, I will be going this winter as a mature student. I'm glad I took this time off, and it really showed me how tough things are. It's good motivation to succeed. If I hadn't been working in my industry than I would have been dissapointed. But I've been shooting tv stuff like crazy, so at least I'm learning what I want in the real world.

But back to helping you. Many freinds of mine had the same problem. The school kept changing its mind every semester. Get your parents to tell them to take you as a part-time student or else basically. Get a letter from your lawyer. I know it seems extreme but my freind did it, got what she wanted, and is now studying film at Niagra College. Also, as far as I know, they only look at your 6 highest OAC marks for University. Guidance councilours try and scare you, but in actuality, the prerequisites, and whatever OAC's you have to make up your top 6 are what count. So if you take 8, and one is messed up but it's not a prereq, than don't sweat it. Hope this helps.

Thanks alot, man.

I'll try with the letter. Also, earlier on, the principal had stated that the only way he will give out part-time student status is for medical reasons. One of my friends got a note from his doctor stating stress-related crap, and the principal said that he will consider it. WTF does that mean? I'm almost done writing the letter to the super. of schools, and my principal, etc. I'll deliver that stuff personally probably friday, and I'll also try the doctor/lawyer thing. We will see...

Once again, thanks for the input.

Matt

This may not be a ton of help, but you couls consider a possible mid-semester school tansfer, to a school that does accept part time students, (alternative schools mostly). This may be hard though as different schools will be teaching different parts of the curriculum, but it's all I could think of.

just wondering, are you still considering engineering? because you really need to understand physics for engineering...especially civil and mechanical.

I went through the same thing. The principal wouldn't let me go part time. I just skipped the class everyday, and I ended up with a 9% in the course. When it came time to send in applications, the guidance counsellor actually scratched that low mark right out.

Or you can add another 9 in front, and call Harvard and MIT with your application. I can't believe most of you guys are still in h/s. Man, day of our lives.... I'm only 21, but I'm done univeristy...did U of Wateroo economics co-op and I fast tracked. I just feel too old at 21.

loudsubz: I agree college is better, depending on what you take. I would give my left nut to go to Media Arts at Sheridan. But it's not as easy as you make it sound man. You need a 90 average minimum to get in, despite what they post in their cut-off info. That's what the head of the program told me. It's harder to get in there than it is to get into RTA at Ryerson. Unfortunatly I didn't get in for this fall, but maybe I'll try as a transfer if I don't like Seneca, which I'm still not sure if I am in yet. Even if I do get in, I have no clue how i am gonna be able to afford $15,000 a year for 3 years. Tuition is $8000, plus residence, plus books, production costs, and food. Ah well, we'll see. But I hope you appreciate that your there. Sheridan rules. Tons of hot honnies hehe.

I think I'd shoot myself if I was still in school. I graduated from university just over a year ago. I'm 25 now.

SiR- Racer, No, I decided that unfortunately since Physics is for some reason not my strong point, I will have to forget about that career move. I'm considering Business at the moment - Marketing, Accounting, etc.

dm101081 - Regarding the school transfer, you're right, all schools don't follow the same guidelines for the curiculum, and would probably be teaching a different part of the course. Besides, I'm only in school for this one semester, so transferring for about 2 months is way too much of a hassle.

SW20 MR2 - Thats what I was thinking, to just skip the class each day. The thing is that my school is messed up, and I'd end up getting a detention each day for missing the class that morning, if I miss the detention, I would get called down during another class, and given another detention, etc. Vicious circle.

Thanks for the input.

Matt

Yeah, well juss cuz your teacher is a retard doens't mean you won't get physics...don't waste your time doing an arts degree or business. Do something solid like engineering. Just go to class and go to sleep, then tell your teacher he can't teach worth **** and walk out. 1. da ladies are gonna think you're pure badass, and you'll get your **** polished or if you are a nerd 2. you can do other homework in phys class. But don't give up engineering. I made that mistake, and now I work like a slob in some lame office.

-DJ Polaczek-,

Are you 18 yet? When I was in OAC, I could write my own notes.

No man, I turn 18 in December..
So I would still have to endure a little bit. I just don't want this course...I always took math and science throughout highschool, and now I regret that I didn't explore some other options. Initially, Commercial Aviation was what I was going to go into. I started out, got my glider pilot liscence, then took physics, and POOF, my dream shattered. So i turned to engineering, figuring that my competence in Mathematics would help me out, and Physics was a barrier again. Then I considered (briefly) Medicine, but Bio isn't the most exciting subject I have taken so far either...
Oh, and University applications start going in in about a week or two...I'd say I'm pretty screwed.

bbarbulo - nice one with the **** polishing.
