Fish experts

Any fish experts here?

Over the weekend I bought a Beta fish, for a small aquiriam I had.

I bought a Male beta, and was wondering If I can buy a female beta to go with it in the tank. I heard 2 males will fight in the same tank, but im wondering about a male and female.

male is all on it's own Matt..
females can be put together tho..

this of course in the norm to the rule..

i've done otherwise w/o any problems tho..
i had a 20 Gal at a time and had 2 males and 4 females in it along with other assorted fish, and it was a happy little community
i got bubble nests in no time and ended up transplanting and breeding a few broods of babies..

Thanks marty.

Are the females the same price as males? When I was at Super pet they only had Males there for like $4.50.

dunno..

this was quite a few years back when i was into it..
probably cheaper tho than the males..they aren't anything to look at really, kinda drab..

just be careful tho, just cuz i had luck doing it doesn't mean you will..make sure you have lots of vegetation/rocks etc. around so the weaker fish have a ton of places to hide and all should be well..

and breeding them is a lot of work too..

Contact Info...

And for this type of fish, when breeding it, should there be a male inside the little chamber thingy along with the female and a live plant. This fish is orange, about 1-2inch long.

ummm....what??

sounds like yer talking about a swordtail or a molly..
both are live-bearing as well..

as with most things in life, only follow the experts advice up to the point that you figure they don't always know everything..
most things in life are trial and error, but usually depend on dumb luck..

beta's make a bubble nest (like the Gourami)..
male makes the nest, chases around the female until he catches her and squeezes the eggs outta her..
he then gathers the eggs and places them in the nest (which by the way floats at the surface of the water..
once this is done remove the female..
once tails are noticed poking from the bottom of the bubbles remove male also..

tada..baby betas..

Si veloz, how long can all those baby betas stay in the same take when do you separate all of them (I'm assuming more then one egg is produced at a time)

once you can tell what is what (m/f) seperate all the females to one tank..
then once you start seeing the males getting agressive it's time to part them out on their own..
ya, i had about 100 at a time..

like i said tho, they're really a biatch to raise..
you'll have to start raising yer own baby brine shrimp to feed them (messy messy messy..)

side note..
cut yer filtration right off..
just have an air stone in there running to circilate the water and add air to the water as well..
very very slight air bubbles coming from the stone..

I dont know what kind of fish were trying to breed at home, and nothing happening for a week. The store says that types of fishes are breeded through bubbles that are from the male at the plants.

ahhh..gotcha..
ya, beta's and gourami's are the most popular bubble nest breeders around here..
i never used a plant tho..just an empty tank w/ both male and female in it..
the male built the nest at the top in a corner..

the fish yer talking about..
do they have long spiky fin kinda things up near there fron towards the bottom?? sounds like the gourami.. (just trying to figure out the orange color yer talking about..)
like i said tho, i've been outta the aquarium scene for ages and ages..
last ones i had were Oscars..
good 2lbers and a pleco about 2 feet long........
wish i still had them

oh, slightly warmer water helps sometimes..
normal's what, around 72F??
try slowly taking it up a hair, but don't go over 80..
and be really careful too, cuz diseases are more common at higher temps..

Oscars are the best I have a 2lber now and damn gotta keep the lid on that thing or it'll jump out trying to get fingers that feed it goldfishies... the oscar eats a gold fish now in one big *** bite the whole thing I don't even think it chews..

Found out they were Dwarf Gourami, but they say the female is duller and the male is brighter, they both seem bright orange, one has a big stomach while the other seems normal. They recommend 10gallon but we only got 1 10 gallon tank with probably 5 other small fishes but we got a breeding thing, not very big will that work...

10 gallon tanks are cheap Az..
like $10..
even a 5 will be okay..

the more expensive stuff is the heater..
you can just get a T and branch off of your existing air pump..
some kind of plastc cover slightly off to one side..

place the male in it..and place it next to the larger tank..(so they can see each other..)
once you see the male start a nest then add the female..
that should get you where ya wanna be..

i'm recommending a second talk because upsetting the nest will mean losing your brood..
leave the male there to tend to the brood untill ya see him getting aggressive (hungry )
