? DVD BURNER, Which to Buy, What SOFTWARE?

When it comes to computers, I don't know shiit..
Could any of you recommend a medium priced internal DVD burner for my home PC? and where to buy it, please!
Also, here's a stupid question...what software do I need to be able to make copies of DVDs we already own (and maybe rental ones if that's allowed/possible)?
I appreciate any helpful responses. Thanks in advance!

For software, I would go with Nero.

For writers, I would get a Sony or LG, for under 100.

pioneer makes the best dvd burners, use in conjunction with dvd shrink to rip and compress, then dvd dycrepter to burn the movie to disk.

If the movie is heavily encoded, use derypter to decode the movie from the disc to the harddrive, then shrink it with dvd shrink so it will fit on a disc, then burn it to disk using dvd decrypter. Its a leathal combo of software, together there is no movies that cannot be copyed with them. They are both free on websites too!

just remember you have to have at least 10 gigs of free hardrive space to do all this. Personally I keep a good 20 gigs free at all times on my OS hardrive then archive the rips to my 200gig drive.

Keep your computer clean, defraged and good running period or else you will have problems

Pioneer is the best.... they're all around the same price.

they have different advantages... decryption speed.. ability to read dirtier, scratches disks, actual burn speed, ability to write at 16x on 8x or 12x reliably, etc... i did a fair bit of research... and went with the pioneer a08/108.

the cd write speed is only 32x... but that's good enough.. considering it does a lot of 8x dvds at 16x.... i've burned over 200 dvds.. and i have only maybe 4 fuct up on me.

exactly what Bruce said:dito: i have the 108 and its awsome. I write a whole dvd always under 7 mins...no coasters yet:thumbup: and 32x cds takes less than 2 min for a full disc.

Only problem i find is it decrypts at 2x so it takes about 30 mins... could be a system setup problem? Or is that about right for the dvr108?? how fast are your rips Bruce?

imported_Bruce Fee 21-Feb-2005 01:24 PM

yeah.. it usually takes about 30 minutes... some have take 2.5 hours... but that includes compressing the vid to fit onto single layer.

i think the benQ can do it in 10 minutes... either BQ or LG... but the pioneer is way more reliable and can burn 16x on a lot more media..

i spent an entire day looking at all the 16x DL burners... pioneer 108 had the best hardware tests and reviews...

NEC was my 2nd choice. For $90, you can't really go wrong.

imported_BoOsTd 21-Feb-2005 01:29 PM

I got my 108 for 106.00$ tax in

Im thinking about getting a fast dvd reader just for quick rips. but when you think about it 30 mins isnt so bad. start the disc go have a beer and its done. I only rent about 2 movies a week so its not so bad i guess. It makes up for itself by never makeing coasters and quick burns.

i have my xbox, tv, computer, stereo, etc... all in my room... so i'll just let them go.. while i'm around.. also if you have a home network, you can run terminal services.. use one pc to rip/burn... and the other to do whatever you want.. from one location.

mechatune 21-Feb-2005 01:39 PM

plextor / pioneer / asus / lg

that's in order of preference. can be bought at canada computers.

software, download nero 6 ultra edition from download.com.

i'll give u the cd key/ serial so u can upgrade to the full version for free.

yah sometimes i use my laptop to rip then transfer it over the network later on. THis is especially good when the movies are due back in an hour lol rip 1 on each computer at the same time then burn later on.:bling:
