DD-WRT (The better kind of router)

Just wanted to lever everyone know that DD-WRT and OpenWRT are awsome.

If anyone doesn't know what DD-WRT and OpenWRT are, they are simply a programming to replace the stock stuff your routers come with. It's based on Linux, and normally just as easy to install as upgrading your router's programming but pointing to the file from the DD-WRT site.

It's incredibly powerful and yet runs on so little. To be honest a cheap Linksys WRT54GL will run you about $**.99 + taxes and runs it perfectly:

It allows you to do so much that I actually run 4 of these in my home now so I have have my wifi reach all 3 floors and still have good enough of a connection to run VoIP over it.

I've recently had to use a pfsense device instead of a DD-WRT router for a while and it was horrible. If anyone is offered a device running something called 'pfsense' instead of a normal router, turn it down. Even for free.

If anyone out there is looking to replace your home router soon post here or PM or Email me: snowtr@gmail.com, and I will help you pick a good router for what you need and reprogram it with DD-WRT.

Thanks for the info. I may be in need of a new router in the future, will contact you. Right now, I use a very cheap router that has lasted for over 5 years and does ok.

their main site is never updated, check their wiki pages on the site, they are always up to date by volunteers. they have a device support table, and they add new routers to the list every day.
