Computer STALLS, while playing .AVI video. Whta to do?

Hi.
I have a MAJOR problem with this.

I have a COMPAQ Presario 700

Windows XP home edition.
AMD Athlon 1.2 GHz
240 Mb RAM

I couldn't play .avi files before(had oly sound, no video playing), since I didn't have the codec for it. Now I downloaded some codecs, and it plays them for a little while, and 5 minutes after, the whole system stalls. The only solution to bring back the system would be to reset the computer.

This problem occurs when no other application is open, and pretty much all the memory is available to use.

I believe it could be the files, that maybe corrupted, but STALLing happens pretty much for all the .avi files I've got. Some after 5 minutes, some afer 10min.

Do you guys have any ideas about this and how to fix it?

click start --->run--->click on the Startup Tab----> click Disable ALL----> press Apply-----> presss Ok

restart computer, and try the videos again.

Do you have some kind of screen saver setup to be activated in 5 mins timeframe?

DirectX version up-to-date?
Video Drivers up-to-date?
Windows Media Player (WMP) up-to-date with all the hotfixes (either v.7 or 9)?

When you are using the WMP to play any clips that are in other format (e.g. MPG), are you experiencing the same problems?

Everything is pretty much up to date. Screen saver comes on, but goes away when I touch something.

STALLing happenes exactly in a specific time, somewhere in the middle of the video. And no matter how many more times I restart and play that video, it happens again.

Now, if I FastForward the video, as soon as it reaches that area, it STALLS.

Same **** happens, no matter if I use WMP, WINAMP, or other players.

Are u talking about the same clip there that are keep on having problems?
have you tried another clip from different source?
Could it be just the corrupted files (not the content...that shouldn't be matters )

Well, I just tried, and every .AVI file I have cauzes this stalling problem. I tried to convert AVi files to MPEG, but agine, even when converting, as soon as it reaches the middle of the file, it f*cking stalls again!

So the problem is the god damn .AVI files!

Well I deleted every god damn file of that sort that I had! I will get other type file next time.

Thanks everyone for your help.
Appreciated.

You should of tried it in a different media player.

I had the same propblem when I played my Initial D AVI files in the XP Winows Media Player. Everything was up to date as well, with all the codecs. Then my brother told me to use the OLD Windows Media Player......guess what? It worked with no problems.

He told me that the old player doesn't have the same amount of stuff running in the background..........that is what was stalling the movie in the XP WMP.

Try this...

Start menu

Search

for Files or folders

all files and folders

Now type in "mplayer2"

then tell it to look in "my computer"

The file should be 5kb in size.

Make a shortcut to your desktop to use it in the future.

Then drag and drop the file onto the player.

If this still doesn't work, you may have a corupt file.....but before you delet it, do a virus scan. There may be something else that is causing this glitch.

one more thing. Even when I used the mplayer2, every once and a while, the movie would pause.

The question I have is this.........are these files being read off of the cdrom drive, or dirrectly off your HD?

If it's off the cdrom drive, copy them to your hd first, then drag and drop them to the player.

PULOVR:

I had them downloaded to my HD when all the stalling was happening.

I will try the old one as you mentioned and see what will happen.

So far, I have tried WMP, Winamp, Quicktime, and DivX player. All STALLED the sh*t out of my system.

I'll see how the old WMP will work.

Thanks a bunch for the help.

Gatsby.

INITIAL D episodes!
Japanness with English Subtitles.

Hey I just downloaded the STAGE3 MOVIE. I'm using the basic WMP. Its a lot better than the newer one, in terms of stability. However, As of now, right in the middle of the 1:44 minute movie, it has crashed 6-7 times! Still better than before though!
