No, it doesn't really sound like a big deal at all. I mean, yes it's a big deal coz someone died, but not in the sense that all of the world must know. 
If it were a ********* who did the shooting then maybe worth noting, but it was a political rival of his own. New York has seen much worse things and I'm sure that they'll get over this rather quickly.
