I actually saw a program on TV last night about a similar topic, except that it was only in reference to the Rock genre.. It was a top 20 list, and U2 was #2. #1 was the Rolling Stones. Although I am not a big fan of the Rolling Stones, I would have to say that they are probably on the top here. They have been touring since the 60's, they are a household name, sales are undoubtedly stellar, etc.

there are a couple of bands i'd vote for..
Stones, Beatles...never really liked them much...too much of that "British Invasion" commercialism shyt
U2 became too political and disco-ish (Zooropa), (Bono please stick your unworkable Kyoto and ...... STFU!!!!! Liberal lover)
Zeppelin..too short lived

I would have to say the Stones as they are still making records and touring. Beatles still have popularity, but they broke up like 30 some odd years ago, plus half of them are dead. U2 has only been around the last 20 some odd years
