Why the cruise control button?

Can someone explain to me the purpose of the cruise control button? My Nissan and my Hondas both have them, as I'm sure many other cars do.

I realize that the idea is that you push the cruise control button, then push "set" to set the cruise control...but what does the button actually do?

I mean, why not just make it so when you press set it just sets the cruise control? It can't be for safety because there is no way you can crash because of cruise control as it turns off the second you touch the brake, and you can't really press set accidently. Plus on my mom's car there is no stupid button you have to push first, you just go to set and it sets the cruise control.

What prevents one from driving with the cruise control button in the on position all the time then? Does it go into a special mode to prepare it from cruise control or is it a completely worthless feature (IMO)? I mean since they bothered to do it there must be a reason but I have no idea what it is.

Thanks,

~Vadim

i believe IT IS for safety purposes....you press the cruise first so you know that you are about to engage the system and then as a next step...put it on set....as opposed to accidently hitting it and the car getting on cruise automatically.

u have all sorts of panicky drivers these days

Sorry, but that is the worst analogy I've ever heard. The worst possible thing that would happen if you somehow accidentally pushed the cruise control button is that your car would accelerate, and as you noticed that an touch the brake it will stop accelerating.

^^ yeah but the 'relax and apply the brake' part is all common sense right? and how common is common sense these days. from a manufacturer's standpoint...safety has to be put first. whether you like it or not.

lol...nooo...the cruise just got hit y0..oh my god oh my god.

on GM's u have to turn the cruise control on before you engage it...I'm pretty sure all cars are like that...some have buttons on the dash and some have switches on the column arm...some people are button pushers and if they engaged cruise at 120kmh without knowing and a bend came up...see you in the guardrail!

my mom drives with the cruise control button on all the time. that way she doesn't have to hit the stupid 'safety button' before she engages the cruise control.

i agree that its pretty stupid. if you dont know how to avoid pressing a button or know how to apply the brake to slow down/stop then maybe you should be taking the bus to work

hahah so true, and so sad.

My mom's car just has a little arm thing sticking out of the steering column, and it just goes:

up for accel/set
down for decel/set
away from you for off
towards you for resume

and tahts it.

And I totally agree with civ9202 about the bus comment :P

lol sorry man but you're on a roll with bad analogies today.

It's not at all the same thing.

First of all, it is obvious that it's hard to accidently turn on cruise even without the button. If you do, and your car starts to accelerate, you brake and it goes off.

Unless one is mentally challenged, the WORST case scenario is:

The cruise used to be set high up, and you're going slow, and you hit resume. Car starts to accelerate, you hit the brakes.

Consequence: Your car sped up by like 2km/h and then you turn of the cruise.

Your argument is further proved wrong because as I said my mom's car and im sure several other manufactuers don't have this annoying safety thing. If it was that cruicial I'm sure all cars would have it...

I understand that its a safety feature, but IMO it's pretty pointless, and many poele here agree with this, but you seem to think its cruicial ?

what car does your mom drive...I'm sure the column stick has a switch for cruise on it along with all the other options...and how many people crash if their gas pedal gets stuck when the obvious thing to do is take it out of gear, or turn off the car?
