What to look for when purchasing an EG hatch.

Hey guys,

I'm in the market for a new car and I'm thinking about making the change over from VW to Honda (sick of the reliability problems of the VWs). I'm looking at picking up an EG hatch - hopefully an Si and if I can't find a decent one I would settle for a coupe. A few questions:

Aside from the usual Honda rust on the rear quarters and front of the hood, what other things should I be wary of?

Where do Civics show accident damage?

Any major mechanical issues that cost $$$ that I should look out for?

Any other buying advice that I should know?

Also, what is the engine code for an EG Si? I know it's a SOHC 1.6L VTEC engine, what other things can you tell me about it?

Also, best bang for your buck mods - what are they? What should I do first? Suspension? Engine performance?

If I decide on an EG (looking at Nissan NX2000s as well) I'll be mainly focused on performance upgrades that work within a daily driver comfort level - not into body kits, neons, and fancy lights... keep this in mind when answering these questions.

Thanks in advance.

92-95 civics all have common rust problems.
imo if you want to get a project car or start a project i would just buy a shell and build up from there.

every single piece on that car is CHEAPPPPPP.
i can do a full show car with all the works for less than 15 grand. that includes wheels, motor, interior, audio etc...

serioulsy its dead cheap..

there are several trims for the hatchback

cx, dx, si those models where available in all years.
and then there was the vx model which came out in 92 and was basically a shell with wheels and vtec.

that would be the best for a true import speed fan.
and there is also the hx which was offered in the states.

none of thse came with power windows or door locks or mirrors.

the si coupe the code is EJ1.

imo if your going for everyday reliablitlity and comfort. i would get the following (say you got about 7 grand to spend)

95 dx shell (since that is the last year and chances are its in good condition)

put a FULL integra dc2 R interior into it and have all the power option's of windows, doorlocks etc... and have a better looking interior

b20z with a gsr tranny

HID kit and omni power full suspension and some wheels.

your good to go.

you will love this car beyond death seriously.

its like having a everyday comfortable ride with the option of pwr everything and also not worry about it not breaking down.

my EX coupe (EJ1, oh yeah baby) has power windows and door locks from the factory but yet still has wheel covers.....well not anymore.
Does anyone else think its funny that the top of the line model civic doesn't have aluminium wheels?
Good choice of car lowblackdub.
I would say the best bang for buck mods are suspension mods. You don't have to have a fast car to have fun in the twisties. Get some good springs/shocks and sway bars and your set. A rear sway bar makes a huge difference over having no rear sway bar at all.
I would also say go with a b20 w/b16 tranny or b18c5 swap (integra type R).

7gs for a 92-95?! that's insane. be patient and keep a look out for them. i looked for one for about 5 weeks before i found a decent one with a decent body. no rust on quarter panels! until i friggin pulled off the plastic strips and found surface rust on it. not that bad though. and check out to see if the corner lights line up. if they don't chances are they probably hit something before.

i think you misunderstood what he was saying....he was saying that if you have 7g's to spend that you could get all what he mentioned....eg, b20, itr interior, omni coilovers.

Did all SIs come with 4 wheel discs or was this a change later in the production cycle of the car? There's a 92 SI I'm interested in and the owner claims that the SIs never got 4 wheel discs...

I believe 92-93si hatchbacks (no coupes) have the rear discs, and 92 ex-v sedans have them too, im pretty sure no other 5th gen had them over here.

Just buy the Car in the Best condition. Spend a bit extra knowing you'll get a solid car. You'll have no problem modifying ANYTHING on an EG. And don't worry about what engine or trim you get either. Go for no power options if you want speed. But "B" swaps are cheap. There is no better performance gain's for the Money.(in the civic world anyway's). You can get Rev's and HP with a B16 for cheap. You can spend a Bit more and Get a GSR swap for a bit more power and Torque. Or you can put a B18A/B or a B20 in there and Boost later. B-Motor's have potential With or Without Vtec. Either way its not an expensive car to Mod. Just Put some Bucks into the Suspension as ZeeMan mentioned and Don't waste your time with the D motor. Save your money and Swap a B motor in.

I'm not necessarily looking for all speed - I want a somewhat comfortable car (creature comforts appeal to me) that isn't gonna rattle like a tin can every time I hit a bump. I like AC and sunroofs and semi-compliant suspensions that can still carve it up - my Golf was exactly that, comfy but grippy. I also enjoy some torque AND high revs (which seem to be mutually exclusive)... I thought it would be fun to play with the D16Z6 for awhile and then swap it out after owning the car for a bit... Thanks for the advice guys - I'm definitely looking for an SI though - I need 4 wheel discs and some options and the VTEC is there to play with until the time for a swap comes.

92 EG's come with rear disc's I know cause I have one. I've heard some later models might now have them. You don't really "need" the 4 wheel discs....and if u really do u can grab them off another civic or integra. Modded civic's arn't exactly "comfy"....but the fun factor is through the room. The SI has all the stuff u want but it's also the heaviest can it might annoy u some point (if you want to go all out). But SI is where your going to get your "comfort". If you mess with the D16 or any D series go turbo (best bang). The B20 with GSR tranny, and omni suspension is also very good....many options with this 2 build a monster. Motors are cheap, parts are cheap....things 2 look for = a good body with no rust. (or hardly no rust) The most annoy thing about my car is the rust. Also watch this board there are a lot of sick cars that come through here at a good price. (usually "post here before autotrader"). Do "smart" mods and you will be happy.
