Question what to look for when buying used summer/winter tires?

Hey guys, I think it would be a good idea to have a tire expert speak here. Im not any good with tires. With winter approaching I need to get my hands on a set of steelies with winter rubber.

I think it would be a good idea to have a few really good tips on what to look for when buying tires for summer or winter or all season.

I know that you check the thread n what not but how can you know if its 80% for sure when someone says so.

With winters, does it really matter if you go with a well known name or something thats in the average price?

If people have any tire questions, just post up here and maybe we can turn this into a Tire / rims / steelies FAQ thread.

I'll be going in a couple of dayz to look at a set of steelies with winter rubber on them. Seller says they have 80% thread left. To be honest I really dont know what to look for. All I know is the size Im looking for.

Any suggestions?

No plugs, nails or excessive wear. You can also purchase a tread depth gauge to measure the actual tread remaining.

theres such a thing to measure the tread remaining? nice!

Oh, this may be a stupid question but will I need to get an alignment done when I switch from rims/summers to steelies/winters ?

Buy a tire tread depth guage, tires new usually have 10-12/32's tread when new. Look at the tire for any unusual bulges or uneven wear. Softer tires are generally better in the winter, and as for brands it depends. Motomaster icetrac's are an off branch of bridgestone blizzaks which is an awesome tire. Tires in my opinion is something you should never cheap out on, a few hundred may save you thousands in body work if u get into an accident

make sure there are no weather cracks in the tires/ sidewalls
make sure the tread isnt cupped, that its nice and flat and even,
make sure there are no bulges in the tire (indicating a shifted belt)

as far as tread depth, goto canadian tire and buy a tread depth gauge, most passenger car tires come with 9/32 or 10/32 of rubber, 5/32 - 6/32 is decent, 7/32 - 10/32 is good and anything below 5/32 isnt that great

hope this helps

kwikb16a2 ... u doo have a point there. I was thinkin of just buying brand new steelies and tires and keepin them for winters to come.

This guy is askin for 300 for a set with 80% left...so I just thought Id save me a couple of hunderd and maybe put that into the HID fund.

I see your point though. Maybe I shouldnt cheap out.

Lets say I dont cheap out. I dont really wana pay any more then 500 for steelies + tires, and I want them put onto my car...
you think thats a reasonable price to ask for?

Ive asked some of our affiliates and Ive calculated the prices to go 600+ (in most cases that doesnt even include install)

If I were you, I would get the Michelin's HydroEdge 215/60/16 becuase you need to get that as high as possible so you don't *** up the kit

lol, thats what I thought. I talk to a few other people and they said that I should just raise my car using the coilovers. And throw on 14's and no bigger... kinda confused me but I guess this would be the best time to ask what size I should get. Stock I believe is 185/60/14.

My kit is like 2.75 inches off the ground. Im gonna swap my front bumper with this other green one that I have. It has the same colour except a few more chips and looks ugly.

This is for the guyz with lowered cars. Is it better to raise the car and get bigger wheels, or to raise the car and get 14's and 13's?

Correct me if I am wrong

Icetrac =! Blizzak
Wintertrac = Slalom

I can not find any Blizzak model that has the same treads as Icetrac.
