Alright, my 88 4d beater needs a new tranny, now do you think it would be easier to put the car on blocks and drop the tranny or pull the motor and change it outside of the car. I don't have a hoist, but i do have an engine lift and some engine removal experience. So, which do you guys think will be the least time consuming?

Im not to sure exactly, but youll probably learn more by taking out the engine and changing it out side the car. But time consuming wise, I would think maybe raising car on blocks, and dropping tranny would be faster. Although, I have no experience in this myself, so I am just guessing.

Brett, it's better to just drop it underneath the car like I did. Jack the car up high, remove the 3 mounts and wrap the chain from the engine hoist on the motor for support so you dont damage or break the last mount and then just pull it out from underneath the car. I did it in my garage in a couple of hours and I barely had any tools.

It's a bit tougher installing it though b/c the tranny is a bit heavy and it's a pain in the *** lining up with the input shaft on the tranny to the center of the clutch disk perfectly while your pulling the tranny from outside of the car threw the hood. If you have someone to give you a quick hand lining that up unless your over 200 lbs and ripped to **** and lifting a tranny up with one arm like it's a piece of paper, then you shouldn't have any problems.

hahaha well you know what i meant though.... how come putting stock springs back in your car isn't as easy as a tranny swap??

its not much harder than taking them out, just get the spring compressor from CT an extra 10min per spring to compress them down

i did all that but it is not that easy..... the spring compressor requires a 26mm wrench and socket... which NOBODY sells

Rick have you checked out the dedicated auto parts stores, they usually have those hard to find tools and expensive tools .

i didn't but they dont have a weak return policy like home depot or crappy tire.... cause i will never need a 26mm again.... but its ok my dad brought some home from work.... the rachet i got it seriously like 1.5' long....

you sure its 26mm? I always thought it was SAE, just didn't know the size.

Why dont you try over 1" SAE size?

Jack the car up high.

Put a milk crate underneath the motor and another under the tranny

Lower your car... use some blocks to shim the motor and tranny to take stress of bolts, and such when you are taking her apart.

Taking out the tranny is a major pain...

I saw at princess auto they have a tranny holder that straps onto your hydraulic jack and has a big pan sorta thing to hold the tranny better.
