Insurance..

We should start a petition of some sort to the government including the issues that are effected by this and the raising rates.

I have thought this out.. we should make a case on it and present it to someone with the power to do something about it because I personally am paying $550 a month on insurance. I have also heard of people paying around the same amount.

We don't have a choice to have insurance or not and if we are getting charged alot of money it dibilitates us. Its also discrimination to make younger people pay alot more for insurance than people that are only a few years older than that paying way less.

I also noticed that honda insurance has gone up alot lately and the parts are just as readily available as domestic parts, how the hell is that fair?

We need to do something legally to help ourselves out.

it's a good idea.... but remember this

statisicly, male drivers under 25 (in canada) are 4 times as likely to get in to an accident or to make a claim then people/persons in the 25-55 age bracket.

your high rates are in part thanks to your friends that "had their car keyed" and now need a new $8000 paint job.

now when i say this ... the first thing that will pop into everyones head is... "well i've never done that"...or my friends are good drivers..... but lets look at the big picture... canada as a whole, not just your imediate friends/family....

it's a great idea... but unfortunatly the government will not do anything until the stats on younger male drivers show otherwise.

your best bet is to find a smaller insurance company that deals with the niche market. When I was younger i was paying $300/month for my civic..... now i pay $70/month

another way to lower your rates (provided that you have no loans/leins on the car) is to only carry liability and fire/theft.
but watch out... because if you're in an accident, your car will be fixed out of your own pocket. You'll still get $$ if your car is vandalized, or stolen... but little fender benders etc, aren't covered.

hope that helps a lil...

I think I'm locked into my insurance plan for the next year so I don't know if I could even switch if I wanted to.

Ask you agents to show you the stats...You've all heard about the high insurance on Harleys but if you actually see the stats on theft and several other issues, sometimes they base their higher rates on 1 percentage point or lower!

I was also getting waked out on payments (I insure way too many vehicles) and when my insurance went up I bounced my automatic withdrawl for 2 months in a row (was scrambling but could not get caught up-if you're insuring a bike, even if you cant afford too pay you cant cancel until the policy runs out!)

Anyway, because of late payments they can put you into a higher risk catagory. BTW they collected from me without any late payments for about 13 years!

AArrg I will definately sign!

On my old car, all I had was fire and theft, as well as liability.Paid $78/month.

You can also pick the liability amount as well. Coverage starts at $250,000.......most insurance companies suggest at least $500,000. The higher the coverage...the more you pay.

Also, you can pick the deductable you must pay for a theft or collision claim......ie.......if 2 people own the same car, same age, same record..........one driver has a deductable of $300, and the other driver has a deductable of $500.....the person with the higher deductible would pay LESS for insurnce. (they would have to pay $500 for a claim......which means the insurance would pay $200 less compared to the other driver.....get it?)

There are alot of variables you can play with to get a better rate.

I pay $79/month for FULL coverage for my Civic HB now.(under my name.)

Ie...

fire and theft.....$300 deductible

Collision.........$500 deductible

loss of wages.....(if I can't go to work, ins pays a percentage of what I would of made if I was un-injured and able to work.)

Uninsured driver

Rental upgrade

Property damage

.......and a whole buch of other stuff.

(If I picked a higher deductable, I would pay even less that $79, but I didn't want to end up paying a deductible of $750 or a $1000 for a claim, only for my insurance to go down another 5-10 dollars. I compermised)

Most of you will get a better rate when you renew after you turn 25.

I had tickets for everything under the sun when I was younger......I learned quickly when it went up-to $350/month for just fire/theft and liability. I didn't drive the car for 2 1/2 years after that. (don't believe me? Ask any of my closer friends.) Took the buss alot. Allowed my record to go clean......and ever since then..... I'm glad I did.

Also....the amount of time that you have been insured with a company helps......if you switch to another company, MAKE SURE YOU GET A DRIVING RECORD FROM YOUR OLD COMPANY TO GIVE TO THE NEW ONE. If you don't, the new company might not give you "years of experience" to help lower you rate.

When I didn't drive for those 2 1/2 years, I still kept the fire and theft on it. (it was only $65 for the year.) I'm glad I did that now, becuase that helps with "years of experience".

ASK THE INSURANCE COMPANY WHAT THE QUOTE YOU GOT INCLUDES!

That way you can campare apples to apples.

Ask what you need/don't need, and if it will lower the rate.

Ask for a higher deductable.....(remember, the higher it is, the more you have to pay out of your own pocket, before the insunce pays for the rest).

And dont forget to try brokers. They can help by doing some of the leg work for you.

There are other ways to get it lower. Come on out one night...I'll be glad to tell you some of them.
