wanting to get a used car but where to start?
sup, anyone with some experience please help.
i want to get a used car but i have no idea where to start. i've been to trader.ca and stuff.
is buying from the dealers better or there is no difference? cus i don't want to get ripped off by buying a car and end up having to pay $1000+ to get it fixed. i just want to buy a working and running car which i don't have to fix to drive.
certified + e-tested does that mean i can just register the car and get insurance then start driving? or it could still contain problems
so when i buy from private i have to pay cash or cheque, which means i have to somehow get a loan from the bank first right?
cus i have a couple thousand on me that i wanted to get a winter beater for $2000 but then the dealers seem to have better running cars which cost around $5000 then i have to finance
if anyone know any good and honest dealers around markham/toronto area please let me know and i'll check it out
thx

alright, thx for the explanations, answered all my concerns
was worried about the e-test and safety for the winter beaters, they seemed such old and crappy cars that i didn't think they would pass.
so even dealers might sell u cars that require fixing? even if they said it's e-tested and certified?
cus i was looking at 94 mx-3 going for $2000
then saw 96 mx-6 at the dealers saying it hasn't been in accident, fully certified and e-tested with warranty for $5800
wanted a civic hatch probably a 5th gen but damn are they costly even with high km ie:200k

some dealer sells their car as is too (simply because they know they can't make any profit off of that car after fixing it...)
even if a car is safetied and etested... it can mean it still needs fixing.......
take timing belt/water pump/etc as an example... a car can pass emission no problem as long as the engine is not leaking or the compression is fine... but then if the mileage is high in the 100s, 200s, and so on... u might want to look into other engine stuff that might need fix up even if its etested...
but for safetied, if its certified... most unlikely there's anything else for you to fix since its declared as a safe vehicle to be run on the road...but there is never a guarantee that you won't required to have any further fixing....
my advice (like keiran) is be patient.. a good car will come soon... you just have to look back here often and not rush your purchase, test out the car, talk with the seller to have a good idea of his/her person... negotiate around... things will eventually work out...
also, the 94 mx-3 at $2000? i doubt the car will be good... maybe enough for a winter... but when you find anything under 3000 for a 94+ car, i don't think it'll be easily fix or etested.... (or it might be in an accident)... again, just my opinion... you might be lucky to find a good deal at a dealer... if you want a decent beater... i'm sure 89-91 civic hatches... at around 2000-2500, you can find a decent one for sure....

thx for the tips, i was thinking it sounded too good also, 94 and only cost $2000 some
i did miss out of a chance that someone i knew was selling 89 crx for $800 was running too
but if i see a good deal at a dealer and it states e-tested and certified does that mean it's good to go? or if something sounds too good to be true it might still have problems?
so the "as is" cars mean that there is obvious problems with it and it's for people who knows how to fix cars and they might get a good deal cus it's being sold so cheaply if they can fix it themselfs?
