how can all you guys say they are not illegal?
they are LEGAL ONLY if they have a DOT marking on it. if it doesnt have it they are ILLEGAL.
i have seen sets of tail lights for the same car and same year without a DOT marking and got a ticket for it not being legal.

where do you find the dot markings on the lights, on the inner black housing or on the outside translucent part?

usually the laws are similar enough that a DOT certified product will also comply with canadian laws, but the DOT rating itself is meaningless here.
