To TCC, from accross the street at TSR

Taken from TSR...very well written and needs to be voiced everywhere...

Yesterday I was listening to edge 102 as I do everyday, and the Brother made a comment just before 5pm about darknights.

He said that the police effort at darknights resulted in about 800 tickets (true), most of them for "speeding" (false). This misinformation annoyed me, so I wrote this.

"Hi Brother,

I just have a comment on something you said on air yesterday regarding the police ticketing and a car show called Darknights on the weekend. You said the majority of the tickets handed out for "speeding", however this wasn't the case. Actually less then half of the 798 tickets were for speeding.

http://www.torontopolice.on.ca/newsr...se.php?id=4126

Most the tickets are not listed there, but I could tell you what they are. They are for modifications done by enthuesists to their own cars. Things like new intake filters, suspension springs that lower your car, mufflers and exhaust systems, window tint, etc. All of these items sold by reputable companies are now being deemed "unsafe" or "pollution devices", which is entirely untrue. The police in their blitz to cut down on street racing have targetted all car enthuesists and have gotten so bad that some car enthuesists are affraid to drive on the street for fear of receiving a ticket that the Highway Traffic Act and the Ministy of Transportation have no laws to cover.

Yes, street racing is wrong and stupid. I am an avid advocate of taking it to the track. But even that is being targetted now by the OPP and the MTO. Here is copy of something someone wrote on a car message board about what the OPP and MTO are doing to those that are doing the smart thing and taking the racing to the track:

http://www.ca.dsm.org/ubb/ultimatebb...c;f=3;t=001235

Now, does this seem like any encouragement to people to take racing off our streets? To me it sounds like a reason to stay put and chance getting a ticket street racing rather then being pretty much be guarenteed a ticket if you go to the track.

I am 26 and have a modified car which I daily drive. A 1994 Dodge Stealth RT twin turbo. Currently it doesn't have many modifications, but I have more on the way. I work at one of Canada's largest law firms, and I am in a shirt and tie most days. Do I sound like a street racer. If not, it doesn't matter because I am still a target for police because of the car I drive and how it is percieved.

Now this may bring up a valid question. Why do I modify my car? Well, the answer is the same as people collect albums. Because they enjoy it. I thoroughly enjoy working on my car, it is my hobby. However, my hobby is under attack by the police and the MTO due to the actions of a few stupid (and mainly younger) drivers.

As a Canadian I have a rights protected under the charter of rights and freedoms including freedom of movement, freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful gathering. Right now, I feel my freedoms are being attacked and I am not alone. My freedom of movement is being interferred with whenever I get pulled over for no other reason then I have a modified car. My freedom of expression is being trampled upon when I get pulled over or ticketed for modifications that in no way effect the safety or emissions of my car, or my ability to drive it. My right to freedom of peaceful gathering is being utterly destroyed by the actions of the police much like those actions they pulled at Darknights. They targeted the car show. They setup road blocks at each entrance/exit and pulled over every car they felt might be modified and then wrote up a bunch of tickets. It is simple profiling and it is wrong.

I believe the police and the media have gone too far in the condemnation of me and my hobby, modifying my car. If they would be so kind as to target street racing not people driving modified cars they would be doing a better service to the public. However, they are both under the impression that the cars are modified for street racing, and that is just not the case.

This has got to stop. If this trend continues the OPP and MTO will be jeopardizing a billion dollar a year industry, and the hobbies of thousands of people withing southern Ontario.

Anyway, sorry about the long rant. It is just many people in the GTA are getting fed up with the demonification of car enthuesists.

Have a good day.

Steve"
