Stripped rear seats illegal or not?

hey guys, I want to gutt my rear seats for a few reasons right now (it won't be permanent) why I'm doing it isn't really relevant. But I want to know if taking out the seats/gutting the rear is illegal or legal? I've heard people say it is illegal and i've heard people say it's legal. I've searched it w/o a reliable answer. If anybody here knows the true answer that would be great.

you do not require seats in a car.
in the HTA all it says is the number of working seat belts is the number of passangers you can have.

which means you can take your seat in the back out.
my accord used to be gutted fully. all it had was driver seat and dash with a wheel to steer thats it. and i was pulled over several times and no one ever gave me a ticket but they did inquire about it and i told them i didnt want an interior.

One time, I went through a road block during those Christmas season and the police asked me if I had any drinks and I said no. Then he looked at the back and inquired where were my back seats and I said I sold them.

He asked again, then I answered with the same answer.

Then I left.

End.

I got pulled over, like team rukus, while I had my interior out to paint it.. had nothing but the drivers seat and dash and wheel.. the cop said 'whats the deal with the interior?' and I just said I was painting it and he said okay and gave me a ticket for my muffler

i don't see what the big deal is about stripping ur interior or taking your back seat out. Some people do it thinking it lightens the car....well the grim reality is not by very much.i placed this to a test my back seat bench weighs like 9.5 lbs when weighed.the upper part 10.door panels i held with one finger and weighed in about 7.5lbs each.so lets see...all 4 panels plus back seat removed from ur car...u save 35lbs. the rear panels are probably even lighter on a hatch...hehe.do u think 35lbs.i wonder why people think it would make their cars noticably faster for the extra noise and police questioning. I'm not saying i'm against it.i only did it once when i went to track.ran full interior and then gutted.difference? not really. i could understand if u want that mean serious ready for whatever look but other that no gain my 2 cents.
