so you say street racers HOW ABOUT DRUNK DRIVERS?

wow what a dumb thread...
so cops should let street racers go and focus on drunk driving INSTEAD?
why not focus on both??
we know drunk driving is a problem, hence RIDE etc... and street racing is a problem..
you're quoting numbers like oh well only 8 people died blah blah blah - how would you feel if one of those numbers was one of your loved ones? let's not play the stats game - you can twist stats to suit any argument these are lives - and no matter if the person got killed by a drunk driver, a street racer, a sleepy driver,a dangerous driver - it's all bad..
the difference is that people feel that the easiest one to distinguish just by looking at the car is the street racer - now I know that's not true, but that doesn't stop media hype. And unfortunately there are a few people that ruin it for everyone, for every 100 responsible tuners there's that 1 who's a dumbass and ruins everyone elses cred...
don't blame the public - blame the dumbasses that actually street race and ruin the 'tuning' scene for everyone else

^no one is saying let street racers off... the point I was trying to get across is that the seem to be focusing more on street racers right now just because of recent events for policial reasons. Sure they do ride programs and everything but they could do more. I went through a ride program a couple times at 3pm on a wednesday. but there seems to be none in my area when the bars get out..... the are packed up and gone.
Anyways the point being is they should care the same amount abotu street racers as the do with other stupid aggressive drivers. You get caught and your car should be impounded and crushed. I know someone who use to drink and drive everyday for 13 years..... and they only reason why this person got caught is because it was in Orillia (OPP college) and a citizen called the cops.
^ that incident alone is a joke because I was very close to that person.

The problem is in how records have been kept over the years.
Drunk driving incidents have been recorded as such for decades now. It's very easy to determine if alcohol has played a role in a collision resulting in death or fatality - even after all the vehicles have skidded to a stop, and even in absence of witnesses, there still remains the alcohol in a driver's blood or breath sample to show that alcohol was involved.
There is no equivalent for street racing. A cop coming across a single car demolished in a ditch one night knows only one thing for sure, that a car has crashed. The cop may be able to infer from skid marks and crash damage an approximate speed of the car when it lost control, but in absence of witnesses or driver confession, there is no way to determine if street racing with another car contributed to the crash.
This is significant. Of the confirmed street racing-related crashes in the past few years, only in a couple of cases did the second racer stick around. In almost every case, the other car or even cars involved all left the scene. Most were later located as a result of witness evidence, but the fact remains, the racing partner will almost never stick around after a crash. If the crashed driver dies or survives but leeps his mouth shut, the incident just becomes another single car crash of unknown cause.
An enormous number of singe car crashes occur late at night with no discernible cause. How many of those are actually street-race related?
The other issue is that until a very few years ago, "street racing" as a cause of collision was simply not one of the categories that existed to be checked off. And going by charges laid, in most cases, suspected street racers would be simply charged with careless or dangerous.
Street racing used to be hard to prove, so the charge was not often used. Careless and dangerous are much easier to make stick. If it seems like hardly anyone ever dies from street racing-related crashes, it's only because the appropriate checkbox for the statisticians didn't exist until recently.

Exactly - there's a huge expenditure in enforcement and public education in place to combat impaired driving and make it socially unacceptable, and has been for years. Despite a doubling and perhaps even tripling of drivers and cars on the orad today, impaired driving deaths are half of what they were 20 years ago.
Now it's the street racers turn. There is no excuse at all for street racing. It is a completely willful act that occurs as a result of a conscious decision to engage in an act known to be illegal and unnecessarily dangerous to other road users, and as such should be treated harshly.
I see no difference in culpability between someone who chooses to race on the street and someone who chooses to drink and drive. By all rights, street racing even in absence of injury or death should be treated as a criminal offence.

All in all both acts, whether it be drunk driving or street racing are both equally irresponsible.
One thing I have noticed though is over the years there's been more stories on drunk driving than in the past in the news, I mean look at the f*cking celebs, Paris, Nicole, Lindsay (all stupid b*tches to be honest) they all get off with a slap on the wrist and I'm sure most drunk drivers are treated the same way, even if they don't have the same amount of money). I wanna know though, just how many DUIs are we not seeing, I mean they come out with the stupid statistics for the D.R.I.V.E every year to show how the program is working but just HOW well is it really working? Or are they just feeding us numbers that are appealing and make us feel "secure" that something is being done about this problem?
DUI will always be a problem simply because people are lazy and big headed and think that they can "handle" things while drunk when clearly they can't.

Where are your facts that drunk drivers get off too easily?? If you are basing your opinion on the 6 o'clock news then that's poor reasoning - the media only feeds the public what gets the public hyped up. Drunk driving isnt' 'sexy' anymore.. almost everyone knows about it - when your parents hear about someone driving drunk and causing an accident or a fatality do their mouths hang open in utter disbelief? No - they shake their heads and say what a shame so sad.
Right now street racing has that shock value - which is why the media is focusing on it.
The police are trying to cut down on drunk driving, they have permanent RIDE checks in the GTA and surrounding areas and they increase the frequencies of those around the holiday time.
And like starboy said - RIDE is just like pulling into a parking lot full of ricers. If you have nothing illegal on your car why do you care??
I got pulled over all the time when I had my civic but it's not like I didn't know what I got myself into when I was modding my car.
Drive down the road weaving in and out of lanes pretending you're drunk - you'll probably be pulled over too - cuz you look like you MIGHT be drunk. same deal with people that have their cars all riced out.

Also - I feel like some people here are misinformed as to the requirements for you being actually charged with street racing - when you complain about the 'stiff penalties of street racing vs drunk driving'
or are you guys all complaining about getting tickets for loud mufflers, blinking neon lights, no front plates, and emissions violations???

do you read anything or just pretend and then comment.....? I never said anything about them not enforcing drinking and driving. I gave a prime example on how some was drinking and driving everyday for over 10 years. You see more drunk drivers because there are more... thats the point. The whole argument is they shouldnot put the emphasis on street racers when there are bigger problems at hand... I never said they were favouring one or the other. But more lives can be saved if you put more focus on the more problematic issues. Michael Bryant was the one putting the emphasis, not just the news. But hes most likely not going to make a public address after the mother was killed and son is in critical condition at sick childrens.
I agree with everyone saying street racers should get a kick in junk and drunk drivers should get it worse, but the only reason why this talk is going on is because of a few incidents that are being blown out of reality.
What pisses everyone off I think is that they are trying to be proactive with street racers which is the unfair part, whereas every other criminal activity they are being reactive. and the only reason they are being proactive now is becuase they had to be reactive after the Mr Virgoe was killed on the 400.
