shifting to late???
I have a 2000 civic se which is basicly a dx ... my civic does not have a tachometer so I m just curious to know if i m shifting too late. I had it for three years and not problems so far however sometimes i think i m shifting it too late
anyways this is what i usually do
0-20 first gear
20-40 second gear
40-60 thirds
60 -80 fourth
80-100 fith
However lately i been doing it a little different , and since i have a loud exhaust because of a leak i m not too sure if its too much for the engine to take ... i just dont want to blow my engine
0-30 (once in a while 40 is i really want to push it)
30-50 ( once in a while 60,70)
50-80 (once in a while 100)
80-100
100 +
anyone with the same type of car and a tachometer can tell me at what rpms I m shifting... I just want to know when is the red line for each gear so that i dont take it that far....
thankss

I will check it when I go home tomorrow morning but I'm almost positive that you don't go over 5k rpm. Since I can reach 90ish in 2nd at 7k rpm and 3rd goes way over 100 at7k rpm. Well anyways ill check in the morning, hopefully I remember haha.

Ive check a few vids on youtube just now
it goes like this
0-60 at 6000 rpm
60-100 at 6000 rpm
but those are the d16y7 with 120 HP , i believe mine is the 105 but i m not too sure... however it feels like it has more than that ....
I just want to know my limits because i dont want to red line... if you know what i mean ..

Hmm it also depends what transmission you have. I'm not too sure about ek's and which models come with what, but at one point I had a longer gear transmission, and 2nd would bring me to 105km/h at redline, now with shorter gear transmission, I top at 90-95. If I remember corectly 2nd/5th gear only are different, otherwise all d16 transmissions are the same.

I would suggest shifting by feel.
By that I mean shifting so that you're not revving too low and ******* the engine but also not screaming the engine. You should be able to feel it out.
Also you could install a mini tach, that would help you know when to shift and you could see where it's revving at.

Keep in mind i have a b18b1 and a gsr tranny
1st: 65 - 70ish
2nd: 110
3rd: 140
4th: unknown... i havent gone to the track nor do i want to lose my car and license.
5th: im at 3k rpm @ 120kmh... so i have no clue :P
I agree with everyone else... If u wanna play it safe get a tach. Better to spend $60 instead of a couple hundred.

yea i want to put a tachometer for the longest time.... That will be my next mod
thanks for all inputs.
BTW i have a loud exhaust so its kind of hard to tell if the engine is screaming for a gear change

You can still 'feel' when your engine is out of juice. Screw the MAX. rpms... that's not your power band anyway. You'll notice before you do hit your govener(heaven forbid) you'll be screaming, but you won't 'feel' and more power... probably should've switched gears 5-10km/h ago.
You don't know what it's like to be out of your powerband? ... has it been that long since I swapped my d16non V to a B18C ITR?
