RPM to high?
 

Hey guys I have a 1999 Honda Civic auto. When I'm going at 100km the RPM is about 3100.

Is this normal or is it revving to high?

What are yours revving at?

my 2000 SiR us at 3200 at 100kph in 5th.

Yours should be lower than it is I'm guessing. Is it shifting into over drive? or staying in 3rd?

You know what I noticed, it jumps up and down by itself from OD to 4th.

Like I Was driving today and it was below 3000 appors at 2750. But all of a sudden it just jumped up.

Tranny problem or comp? What you think?

cluster problem.

how is it a cluster problem if the actual rpm changes? if the car is hunting in and out of overdrive there is something going on...could be low trans fluid or something else in the tranny or even possibly the ecu

Can't be the fluid because I had it changed not to long ago.

I'm thinking it's ECU or Tranny itself.

Defineteley not the cluster.

I guess there is only one solution!!

Do the auto to manual and B16 2nd gen swap.

But keep the diag coming guys.

My old auto transmission used to have the 3rd & 4th gear hunting problem between 60-70km/hr... even if I had my foot perfectly still, it'd switch if I started going up or down the smallest hill on the road. It's quite a common issue with that transmission. It's never happened at 100km/hr though. The most common remedy (and the one I used) was to just keep the stick in 3rd below 60km/hr and only put it into drive AFTER you've accelerated to your cruising speed.

For the life of me, I can't find the D16Y7 / S24A Transmission specs to double-check the 4th gear RPM reading for 100km/hr, but it sounds about right. 120km/hr was around 3800-4000 RPM for me, if I recall correctly.

Either way, if your transmission is hunting anywhere between 50km/hr and highway speed, either the ECU is receiving artificially high load, incorrect vehicle speed sensor readings or wonky Throttle Position Sensor readings and is ordering a gear change to keep enough torque to the wheels to meet what it perceives as your 'demands'.

Take a look at your airbox filter and tubing... especially if you're noticing a loss of power... starving the engine pretty well artificially increases the demand on it, making you have to push your foot down further, keeping you in a lower gear longer than you should be.

Edit: I just reread your post about 2700ish RPM jumping back to 3rd gear : WELCOME TO CIVIC COUNTRY!!!! Every EK Auto does this!!!

does it jump up on its own, or are you giving it more gas?
it might just be downshifting if you're giving it more gas.
