Question about mileage

Okay, I am hoping to finally get this answered once and for all!

Mileage: would you say that, on average, it's about 15K kms or even 20K km is considered an avg. per year?

I'm wondering how much stock you put into the mileage when you guys buy a vehicle? Unfortunately, if I buy a newer and/or more expensive vehicle, I have to finance or lease it. It seems that newer vehicles sold through private sellers have lower mileage (well, that's my perception so far). But, I would have to buy from a dealer.

Should I mostly go by exterior condition and overall mechanical condition if I find a car that meets my requirements but the kms are a bit high?

I had the idea I could always do an engine swap down the line when the car's paid off or the kms are really high.

The cars I'm considering, so far, are:
1) Civic SIR / Civic EK hatch / Civic Si (?)
2) Integra
3) Prelude

I find these cars and the price seems a bit steep but what is more alarming is the high kms on some of these vehicles. They might not be over 200K km but I notice people selling cars on here and the avg. seems to range from 80-120K kms.

Should I consider cars with slightly high kms for the year? I have photocopies of the Red Book info for these cars and thus, I have car prices and a km chart to help guide me on acceptable dealer prices. I also use the black book website and other than that, I only need to obtain carfax info.

Can someone give me their opinion on how to assess mileage or is the exterior and overall mechanical condition more important?

Thanks.

well usually its 20000 km a year on a lease so i think thats the norm af average driving and for your question both ar important well to me ne ways ... if the body has been racked up b4 well im not really into that. but i know some guys dont really care or if a car is rusted out well im not really into that either the main thing is drive the car make sure it idles smooth , thak it on the hoghway make sure it drives smoooth , steering vibration, body vibration, vibrating noises from the front of the car are usually bad signs for a car especially with only 120 some odd k's if u have a mechanic or access to a hoist check out the car their so u can get a real look of the things u should be checkin out ... see ya !!

Thanks, guys!!! Well, I won't consider anything with any rust on it unless I'm only spending <5 grand.

If most of the choices of used cars <year 2003 model have really high kms, then the body better be mint or near mint.

I think most of the candidates will be in Kitchener or Toronto area but my mechanic is in neither of these cities.

Can anyone recommend a mechanic in the Toronto area to take a car if I find one I'm seriously interested in? Perhaps, this should be a separate post? I will go and use the search function but I'm also wondering how far the dealer will let you take a car to get an inspection.

My other concern is that I want a 5spd (6spd cars will be newer and probably out of my assigned price range) and I'm not familiar with stick. I'd like to take the prospective car around town and on the highway but... ???

a daily driven car with 24k a year is normal consider they drive the car 500 km a week... which means about 70km a day is normal... its all about the maintenance and body condition... a car with 300000 can have no rusts and engine runs mint, but the only concern are the other stuff like brakes, boots, joints, all lines, some mechanical stuff like a/c, heater, ps, etc.
a low mileage car can be abused and so the value shouldn't be as high...

ie. i can be an owner of a 00 sir with just 50,000km, but what if those 50,000 were like vtec-ing at 8000rpm from 1st to 4th? and then the oil change is just regular oil every 8000-10000km instead of the typical people at 4000-5000... and those crazy people might not care about the body... i've seen a car with less than 70000km started to rust up...

so mileage is not the whole story... you always have to really inspect the car in every perspective to judge a price, i never believe in book value because they only judge on mileage.... not like they have a record of your rust condition and your maintenance records...

Good points! I'll keep that in mind. One thing I'm planning on doing is rust proofing the car. Even if the dealer claims they've done it. I think if I'm investing in a 5 grand+ car, I should do my best to keep the body in good condition. That's why the car has to have no rust. An engine swap is an option down the road if it's not a SIR/GSR but at the very least, the exterior has to be in top shape as well as the mechanical condition.

That brings me to another question: is Krown a good place to take the car? Also, I should try to find a car in which the owner and dealer rust-proofed the car annually, right?
