It would help if you indicated what kind of car it is. what to look at on ne certain brand/model might be totally different for another. Trip permyou get from the MTO and they require proof of insurance and I believe the ownership to be in your name.

alright thanx guys its a 98 civic hatchback,
iasked for the vin over email he said no due to theft purposes.
my mechanic is in stoney creek and this guy lives in toronto.
if he doesnt agree with me bringing the car to the shop what should i do.
i might just throw plates on it and just drive it back

all u need to get the temporary is an insurance policy number they dont evenb ask for proof and u need that guys ownership to do it.
theres no more temporary license plate, u have to buy ur plates right away and they put a little "T" sticker on it to indicate that it is a temporary
look for rust under the body thats the worst, u dont wanna buy a rust bucket like i did.

That's the very last thing you want to do.
First off, you can't just "put on plates" unless those plates are registered to the car by the Ministry. You risk serious fines and even jail time if caught. So does the owner if he lets you do so.
Second off, and this is the big one, you'll have no insurance coverage. You risk license suspension and a minimum $5,000 fine on that if caught, and risk losing a whole lot more than that if you have even a minor crash. So does the owner if he lets you do so.
You said in another post that the guy wants $5,500 for the car? For an 11 year old car, 220,000 km on the body, 75,000 km on a rebuilt motor?
I'd walk away.
Take a look on the Autotrader web site. Do a search for all cars in Ontario priced at $6,000 or under. There are several newer and in some cases MUCH newer cars for the same money. There are a LOT of cars of similar age for a lot less money. Some are low mileage lease returns.
You might not get the "performance" parts that are on the Honda you're looking at, but you also won't get the trouble that often accompanies such parts on a much-used and much-older car.
Maybe more important, many of these cars can be had from dealerships, and that gives you a lot more protection from fraud or misrepresentation than you will ever get from a private seller.

yea u can do that...if u want a huge ticket when they find out ur dirving a car with unregistered plates nd no insurance...ull get a 5000 dollar ticket right off the bat for no insurance and u can even get a ticket for driving a stolen car if u put plates on it that arent registered to the car

If you own a registered, insured car with vaild plates you CAN take those plates and put them on any car you just bought, as long as the car you put them on is going into your name and the ownership has been signed and dated and you are within 5 days of the date. You need to carry the signed and dated owership of the car you are buying, the ownership of the car the plates came from, and your vaild insurance slip. Again let me remind you, this can only be done within 5 days of the date on the signed ownership. You are fully coverend. Have done this a few times myself.
