I would suggest swapping another D16 or a D15B. Get the rust fixed poperly, do what ever mods you want and he should be good to go.

ahhh man, to do a civic over...what would i do..$5000 is a tight budget, but it can be done. He has to choose though, speed, show, interior/comfort. I would allow $3000 for under the hood, $2000 for bodywork/paint and $1000 for safety stuff (tie rods, ball joints, brakes...whatever it needs to pass safety).
I would personally put a b20 w/gsr tranny in, realistically that can be done for $3000 even if paying for labour. Don't forget to change the timing belt, water pump, distributor cap and rotor, spark plug wires and spark plugs before putting the engine in. And if theres room in the budget change the clutch and possibly flywheel while its out.
This will make going from a benz to civic not so bad.
Although i do like the idea of getting a new accord, i say go for the project. Either way make sure he maintains whatever car he gets, if he would have maintained this civic it would be in way better shape.

Gsr full interior (dash, panels, seats), gsr suspension, blades, b20/gsr trans, get all body work done PROPERLY then fix everything i.e. tie rods and etc. then your laughing with a nice car. Hey you can just ITR everything instead!

thanks for all the comments so far....so it seems that most of u guys would do the swap instead of spending money on maintenance updates....it makes sense to spend roughly the same amount on a motor that is less driven plus is a bit more powerful.

Thanks for your comments Andrew....a B series swap would be expensive IMO. I was thinking more towards a D series swap. My reasoning is that he's not gonna race or whatever...its a small car anyway so a D16/D15 engine sounds alright...

Once the engine is done...next will be the body work...a full re-paint is what im thinking of at this time.

Any other mods or ICE is purely optional in my opinion and they will come at the end....

I will wait for a few more days to see more comments and discussion..then the plan is to start checking with affiliates. You guys are more than welcome to recommend someone if you know who has good experience with this work.

i was just suggesting what I would do. But if its comfort/reliability he's after then his budget is rather big. You could swap in a lower mileage engine, change the clutch, timing belt, water pump, distributor cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires and whatever else is needed, get all the safety things in order, buy some rims/tires, get bodywork/paint done and still have some money left over to lower it.
Honestly you could get a b20/gsr tranny installed for $3G's, but if he doesn't care how fast it is, just swap in a newer d-series.
